Nitroball Rules
Game Play: The ball MUST bounce off the court before EVERY strike (except the serve). A player may not hit the ball twice consecutively. Each team is given three hits per side. Kicking or heading the ball is not allowed. Blocks are illegal as the ball must hit the ground before every strike (this includes attempted blocks/passes and intentional/unintentional strikes). The ball can be struck with one hand or two hands. Scoring: A point is scored when: The ball bounces twice on the opponents side. The opposing team is unable to return the ball within three hits. The opposing team cannot legally return the ball into the court. The opposing team hits the ball out of bounds. The opposing team commits a fault or foul. Directions: A typical court measures 78L x 36W (the size of a doubles tennis court), with the service line 21 from the net and the baseline 39 from the net. The net should be 36 to 42 high. NitroBall uses rally scoring in which a point is awarded each time the ball is served. The first team to score 21 points wins (team must win by 2 points with 25 as the scoring cap). The team that wins 2 out of 3 games wins the match. Players take turns serving in a clockwise rotation, with the server standing at a pre-determined location (between the service line and baseline on a conventional
25

tennis court). Other teammates must be on the court when the ball is served, with two players between the service line and the net and the other two between the service line and baseline. The server can hit the ball with a conventional underhand serve or bounce the ball on the court then hit with an underhand serve. Overhand and sidearm serves are not allowed. Two serves are allowed for Upper Elementary or Middle School players; 1 serve for High School or College players. Once the ball is served, players can move in any formation on the court. The serving team continues to serve until the other team scores a point; the serve is then awarded to that team. A service fault occurs if the ball fails to make it over the net, touches a player of the serving team, strikes anything other than the net, lands out of bounds, or the servers foot steps over the serving line. If this occurs, the serve is awarded to the other team. Reference: Rules and directions taken directly from http://www.gophersport.com/files/pdf/mio_58142_activityinstructions.pdf

Take A Trip on The Nitro Express

There is new sport that is popular in town. In Mr. Wilcoxs senior class he decided to introduce a new game to the school physical education department. Nitroball is known as inverted volleyball. The ball must bounce before one and hit it back over the net. Instead of hitting the ball up the players hit the ball down. Many of the same rules to volleyball apply with this particularly strange sport. All you need is a tennis court and a volleyball, says physical educator Mr. Wilcox. The students love the new sport that was introduced to them for the first time. Nick Kinder, a student involved in Nitroball says, None of us have every played Nitroball and it is pretty fun to learn a new sport, it sort of even out the playing field too. All of the students participate really seem to be having a lot of fun. In the first game of the season team Sweden squared off against team Germany. This was an ultra competitive and thrilling game. The students were extremely competitive and highly motivated to win. Sweden got out to a 3-0
39

start but Germany hung in there to make it a close finish. The game went down to the wire but the final score ended up being 22-20 in a match that was played to 21 (win by 2). Tyrone Jordan had 8 kills and 6 assists for team sweden. Mike Mckeon for team Germany clocked 11 kills and 4 assists in the loss. Nitroball may be coming to a gym class near you. Many other teachers from around the northeastern region are hopping on the train known as the nitro express.

Fair Play
The goals of fair play, which we will focus on: 1. Give it your all, students will learn the game the best and have the most fun if all students are participating with their full effort. It also makes for more exciting games and students will get the best experience if they participate fully. 2. Respect your teammates, the other team, the officials, and anyone else who is involved. Students must maintain their self-control, only make positive statements, and be supportive of everyone in the class.

3. Sportsmanship must be displayed at ALL times to ALL students. Regardless if youre winning, losing, or not keeping score. No negative comments will be tolerated and games are always more fun when everyone is practicing good sportsmanship. 4. Be productive, help out your fellow classmates with their responsibilities such as cleaning up the courts or setting it up.

Fair Play Behaviors: Give it your all: Attend every class Be on time
41

Do your role responsibilities Participate fully in each game, practice and activity Respect: Respect all the students and teachers in your class No negative comments Resolve conflicts fairly Support your team Sportsmanship: Play by the rules of the game Be honest about questionable calls or any call Support your teammates Be positive No complaining No trash talk with opponents Be productive: Do your duty Help others with theirs if they need it Ask the teacher if there is anything you can do If you see something you can help with, do it!

Goals for Fair Play and Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship Team Goals: We promise to always demonstrate sportsmanship by staying positive with

42

our own teammates and coaches, along with the officials and opposing teams. We will always encourage each other and never be negative. If you do not have anything nice to say then dont anything at all. If we do not demonstrate sportsmanship than we will be negatively affected by losing points during the season on our final grade. By demonstrating sportsmanship, you put your team in a better advantage towards winning the sportsmanship award on the last day of the season.
