LEARNING PLAN

Science Grade: 2nd

Lesson Plan Topic: Continuing the Solar System Learning Targets

CC Standard(s) (think of this as a long term goal): Next Generation Science Standards: ESS1.A: The Universe and Its Stars Earth and its solar system are part of the Milky Way galaxy, which is one of many galaxies in the universe. ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System The solar system consists of the sun and a collection of objects, including planets, their moons, and asteroids that are held in orbit around the sun by its gravitational pull on them. The solar system appears to have formed from a disk of dust and gas, drawn together by gravity.

Learning target(s)/objective(s) for this lesson: Students will know/understand Student will understand what a solar system is, and what planets are in our solar system. Students will understand that there is more than one point of view of how the solar system, stars, and sun came to be in outer space. Students will be able to Students will be able to identify/know what the sun is and its purpose in the solar system. Student-friendly target: I can name the planets in our solar system. I can tell you about the sun and its role in our solar system. I can know that the science is always changing with as new evidence/facts become known. Assessment Evidence I will know students have met the target if They are able to identify what a solar system is, what is consists of, and what planets make up our solar system. They can also explain, in words, what the sun is and does. Instruction and Formative Assessment Plan Materials/Resources/Digital Media Needed: Clip boards Both Solar system worksheet packet Pencil 3 books on the solar system o I Can Read About Planets by Darrow Schecter o Our Solar System by Seymour Simon o read Sky Sisters by Bourdeau Waboose

Learning Activity I will start off this lesson by giving a pre assessment on money. We will be starting a math unit on money, and I need to do a pre assessment in order to come up with my game plan for the unit. After the math pre assessment we will do our daily geography. I will then give students 10 to 15 minutes to continue decorating their solar system folders with the planets. I will then start the lesson by asking the students what which planets we have explored already, and what they can remember about those planets. This will allow me to assess how well students understand what we have been learning.

Formative Assessment

Listen/watch students explanations and understanding of the solar system. I will revisit vocabulary words that student do not yet know or understand.

Listen/watch students as we fill out solar system packets to check for We will then discuss what we have learned from the reading. understanding and We will then start to fill out the Earth pages of our solar system packets together, as we completion of page. If use the Our Solar System by Seymour Simon to guide us. students are struggling, remind to follow along After this I will ask the students to return to their seats and continue working on their with me as I read, and to second solar system packet up to Earth. This will allow the students to tell me what they track what I am learned about Earth in their own words. reading/writing on the packet.
I will read I Can Read About Planets by Darrow Schecter Finally I will read Sky Sisters by Bourdeau Waboose to show the students another perspective of how the solar system came to be.
