March 3, 2014 To Whom It May Concern: I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation on behalf of Nick Lieto in support of his

application for employment as a band director. I have known Nick for five years as he was a student in the Bronco Marching Band, University Concert Band, and Instrumental Methods courses I teach. During this time I observed Nick to be a very talented and hard working student. The work he did was consistently high quality. In addition, Nick has a strong character and always keeps the best interests of his students in mind. I recommend him highly. Nick was in my class as part of the sequence in Instrumental Music Education methods of teaching. As part of this curriculum each student is assigned to a local school for weekly intern work as well as rigorous academic course work. Through all of these demands Nick worked very hard to demonstrate high standards of understanding and achievement. He was always prepared for class, and his participation in class discussions was always thoughtful and frequently added depth to our discussions. Through observing his teaching in our fieldwork opportunities, I am confident to say that Nick consistently and successfully applied the knowledge from class to real world situations. He has excellent classroom management and maintains high expectations for his students. Nick is also a very talented musician. He exudes confidence and passion in all of his work whether as a teacher or performer on flute. He was a model student in both the University Concert Band and Bronco Marching Band. The latter part of his college career he performed in the University Symphonic Band, WMUs top band which is extremely competitive into which only the best musicians at the University are selected, and the University Orchestra. His has excellent musicianship and translates it well into his teaching. On a personal note, Nick is a kind and warm person who will go out of his way to help those who need it. In addition, I have seen few students who have the passion for teaching that he has. He will make an excellent colleague and faculty member. As a father, I often ask myself would I want this person to teach my child? and the answer in Nicks case is easily yes. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you desire any further information. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely,

David W. Montgomery, D.M.A. Director, Bronco Marching Band Music Education professor Western Michigan University 269-387-4702 david.montgomery@wmich.edu
