Secondary Education Suggested Lesson Plan Name: Kimberly Hanslovan Title of Unit: Photosynthesis and Cell Respiration Title

of Lesson: Overview of the Concepts involved in photosynthesis and cell respiration Grade Level(s): 9th Goal: Have student break down the steps involved in photosynthesis and cell respiration into a concept map and apply this to their project. Objective(s): students will be able to . Outline the steps of photosynthesis and cell respiration Explain how a plant makes its own energy and how that plant uses its energy Write the chemical equations for photosynthesis and cell resp. Standards/Assessment Anchors BIO A 1 1 explain the characteristics common to all organisms BIO A 3 1 identify and describe the cell structures involved in processing energy BIO A 3 2 identify and describe how organisms obtain and transform energy for their life processes BIO B 4 2 describe interactions and relationships in an ecosystem Formative Assessment Student participation in creating concept map Points for accuracy in completed concept map Application of material taught in class towards their previously assigned project Rationale: This lesson serves to summarize all the minute details we have learned about photosynthesis and cell respiration into an easy to follow concept map. The project actively involves the students to stimulate their creativity and put into context what they have been learning. Content Knowledge: Light dependent and independent reactions, glycolysis, krebs cycle and ETC Procedures: Student application students take the knowledge they previous gained an apply it to forming a concept map. Lesson Beginning Review photosynthesis and cell respiration chemical equation Motivate the students by informing them that the information they are about to learn will help them as they construct their ideas for the project that is due Monday. Model what the students will be doing by placing the first word in the appropriate concept map bubble. Ask the students to give you at least one of the other answers before allowing them to complete the concept map on their own. Lesson Development On the board you will find a concept map for both photosynthesis and cell respiration. Take the first 5 min. of class and try to fill in the bubbles using the words that are posted on the board. Take the next 5 min. to work with a partner to determine if you are correct. As a class take 10 15 min to explain the proper outline for both photosynthesis and cell respiration. Have the students use this material while they work on their previously assigned creativity project. Lesson Ending

Review the things that are needed in the student project and give the remaining class time for the student to work on their project. Remind the students this is the only class time they will have and that the project is due Monday. Inform the students that tomorrows lesson will be a web-quest. And pass out the homework 4.6 study guide homework. Materials: chalk board, paper cut outs of concept map words References: none Mode: Student explanation Special Adaptations: use active participation strategies, use color cues, tell students to discuss answer with partner before saying the answer. Anticipated Difficulties: students may not be willing to come to the board to move the appropriate words (put them up myself), they may not understand the processes ( in which case open book and search for answer)
