Lesson Title: ___From Seed to Plant___

Objectives

Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge gained from the book from From Seed to Plant by nurturing a seed until it grows into a plant. Students will calculate average plant growth by graphing plant height daily. Students will summarize information from the text by taking notes during the reading of the book. Students will predict future rates of plant growth by analyzing data and journaling about findings including estimating future growth. Materials & Resources

Anticipatory Set

Plant growth activity displayed in the classroom upon student arrival. Teacher will guide a classroom discussion by asking questions about plants such as have you ever watched a plant grow? and Where do plants come from? Guide the conversation toward describing the purpose of a seed. The teacher will assign the students into six groups. Each group consisting of five roles including recorder/presenter, graphing coordinator, health monitor/gardener, mathematician, and leader. In these groups they will grow, nurture, and measure their own plant. Students will learn the process of growing a plant by planting and monitoring their own plant in the classroom. Teacher will read From Seed to Plant requiring that the students take notes on what they think is important for a seed to grow into a plant. Students will complete the Metric Mania activity sheet.

Objective Input (What students already know.)

Model (How will you demonstrate skills?)

The teacher will model measuring skills in millimeters, specifically for their plant. The teacher will make sure the students know where the measurements start on the ruler. The teacher will demonstrate how to plant a seed by reading back of the seed packet aloud to the class. Then will plant the seed. The teacher will demonstrate proper journal entries by presenting their own journal, along with a graph prepared for tracking actual plant growth. *Day 5: demonstrate how to find the average of seed growth.*

Check for Understanding

Children will independently plant their own seeds measuring their starting height at zero and graphing their results on the Promethean Board. Journaling will be monitored by the teacher to ensure full understanding of the requirements. On Days 2-5 the activities will be teacher guided. Students will predict the growth of their plant after a discussion on how fast plants grow. Predictions and other findings will be recorded in their student journal. Students will use graph paper to record their own plant growth. *Day 5- the class will calculate the average growth of the teachers plant. On days 6-10 students will work independently measuring height, journaling, calculating average height, and graphing the height of their own plant. This will be completed as part of the daily five. *Day 10- Groups will calculate the average growth of their plant per day for their entire group. Each group will present their plant growth using their Promethean Board chart. Presenting will be done by the recorder/presenter with the assistance of the entire group.
