Understanding the importance of the Respiratory System

LESSON Description: Todays lesson will include: 1. Lung capacity activity #1 2. Learning the functions and structures of the respiratory system 3. Understanding the process of gas exchange in relation to the circulatory system 4. Lung capacity activity #2 5. YouTube recap video 6. Evaluating the effects of smoking on the lungs Connection to CULMINATING ACTIVITY: Students will be able to recognize and describe the flow of air in the respiratory system. They will understand the importance of this system with regards to other organ systems.

Planning Information:
Curriculum Connections Overall Expectation(s): B1. Evaluate the importance of medical developments related to systems biology, and analyse their societal and ethical implications B2. Investigate organs and systems in animals using research and inquiry skills, including various laboratory techniques B3. Demonstrate an understanding of the hierarchical organization of cells, from tissues, to organs, to systems in animals and plants Specific Expectation(s): B1.3 Describe public health strategies related to systems biology and assess their impact on society (ie: the effects of smoking on the respiratory system, the effectiveness of anti-smoking advertisements) B2.1 Use appropriate terminology related to cells, tissues, organs and systems of living things B3.4 Explain the primary functions of a variety of systems in animals B3.5 Explain the interaction of different systems within an organism and why such interactions are necessary for the organisms survival Learning Goal(s) or Enduring Understandings: I will Understand the functions of the respiratory system Identify the structures and the path of air

Learn how our lungs exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide Analyze the connection to other organ systems Discuss the effects of smoking on our lungs

Success Criteria I will be able to label the anatomy of the respiratory system and explain the function of each structure discuss and orally explain the interaction between the respiratory system and circulatory system Essential Questions: What are the responsibilities of the respiratory system? What are the structures? How does the process of gas exchange occur? What is the difference between external and internal respiration? What are the connections between the respiratory and circulatory systems? What are the effects of smoking on the respiratory system and how can anti-smoking advertisements be more effective? Prior Knowledge Required (the knowledge/concepts and skills students must possess to be successful in this lesson) The hierarchy of the organization of the body Students have some idea that we breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide Students have some idea that oxygen is needed in all cells of our body Differentiated Instruction Details
How will you differentiate your lesson? Provide details

Knowledge of Students Differentiation based on student: Readiness Interests Learner Profile:

Styles Intelligences Other (e.g., environment, gender, culture)

Need to Know If the students are satisfied with the pace, vocabulary used, the images If the students can apply their knowledge to a discussion How to Find Out Checking in, making sure students are following throughout the lesson Walk around to make sure students are taking notes and understanding Class discussion at the end of the lesson Differentiated Instruction Response Learning materials (content) Ways of learning (process) Ways of demonstrating learning (product) Learning environment

Agenda (to be listed on blackboard, in student language) 1. Balloon activity (lung capacity) 2. Interesting facts/questionnaire 3. The functions of the respiratory system 4. The structures of the respiratory system 5. The process of gas exchange and the connection to the circulatory system 6. Balloon activity (lung capacity post-exercise) 7. Internal vs. External respiration 8. YouTube video 9. Discussion about smoking Connections
L: Literacy AfL, AoL: Assessment for/of Learning

Minds On (Hook)
Establishing a positive learning environment Connecting to prior learning and/or experiences Setting the context for learning

Individual Lung capacity activity

5-10 minutes

AfL: Strategy/Assessment Tool

Description Start Up Measuring lung capacity using a balloon Have students force-exhale into a balloon in one breath Discussion about the importance of lungs, intro into the respiratory system Fun facts about the lungs Action
Introducing new learning or extending/reinforcing prior learning Providing opportunities for practice and application of learning (guided > independent)

Participation

Whole Class Description Part One: Functions, structures and processes of respiratory system PowerPoint presentation Students will be taking notes in their notebook

AfL: Strategy/Assessment Tool

30 min Verbal feedback Class participation and interaction

Part Two: Lung capacity activity #2 10 min Have students perform 10 jumping jacks before they force-exhale into a balloon in one breath Discussion about the importance of lungs, integration of exercise

Part Three: Recap & Video 5 min Verify that the students understand the path of air from inhalation to exhalation through questions/answers and class discussion Summarize the system with a video Consolidation and Connection
Helping students demonstrate what they have learned Providing opportunities for consolidation and reflection

Groups of 2-3 students

15 minutes
AfL or AoL: Strategy/Assessment Tool

Description In groups of 2-3, discuss and record your answers for the following questions: 1. Why is smoking cigarettes bad for you? 2. How does the smoke affect the structures of the respiratory system? 3. Cigarette boxes currently have warning labels on them about the harmful effects of smoking. Do you think this method is effective? 4. How could anti-smoking advertisements be more effective in deterring people from smoking? We will discuss these answers together as a class

Class participation and discussion

Walk around Verbal feedback

Work Period Class time to work on the handout
