Theorem: Areas of Similar Polygons

If two polygons are similar with the lengths of corresponding sides in the ratio of a:b, then the ratio of their areas is a2 : b2.
Side length of Quad. I a Side length of Quad. II b

Area of Quad. I a 2 2 Area of Quad. II b

Example 1
Pentagons ABCDE and LMNPQ are similar. Find the ratio (red to blue) of the perimeters of the pentagons. 1:2 Find the ratio (red to blue) of the areas of the pentagons. 1:4

Checkpoint 1
The ratio of the corresponding sides of two similar hexagons is 3:2. Find the ratio of their perimeters. Find the ratio of their areas. 3:2 9:4

Checkpoint 1
How can you find the area of a polygon if you know its perimeter and the perimeter and area of a similar polygon? The ratio of their areas is the square of the ratio of their perimeters. So just set up a proportion and solve!
