The Old Kingdom Day 3 Social Studies: The Old Kingdom

Subject: Ancient History Topic: The Old Kingdom Lesson Summary: Students will find out from this selection that the Egyptian people believed that pharoahs were living gods. This helped the pharaohs establish their reign and authority. The students will also discover from this selection that Egyptians believed in an afterlife and that this afterlife was accessible to all people. This belief in the afterlife inspired many pharaohs to have pyramids built as their burial tomb. During the course of the lesson the students will read and outline the key points about the old Egyptian kingdom. The students will also answer questions while reading the text selection. Lesson Objectives: Students will explain Egypts political system. Students will describe the earliest uses of Egyptian writing. Students will describe early Egyptian architecture. Standards: HSS 6.2 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious and social structures of the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Kush. HSS 6.23 Understand the relationship between religion and social and political order in Mesopotamia and Egypt. HSS Discuss the main features of Egyptian Art and architecture. Trace the evolution of language and its written form.

Duration: 1 hour Input: Egyptian people believed that pharoahs were living gods. This helped the pharaohs

establish their reign and authority. Egyptians also believed in an afterlife and that this afterlife was accessible to all people. This belief in the afterlife inspired many pharaohs to have pyramids built as their burial tomb. During the course of the lesson the students will read and discover about the old Egyptian kingdom. Also students will have an introduction of the key terms using google slides. The engagement piece often opens the door to learning. Tim and Moby- Mummies Model: The students will create their own hieroglyphics story using the page shown below. I will explain to the students that this narrative can be on any subject or topic they choose. After they have created their narrative out of hieroglyphics the students will use a story creation program called Narrable. The students can record and add pictures to represent the plot and details of their story. Guided Practice: I will show the students my own Narrable e.g. and walk them through the steps of creating their own Narrable. The students will choose picture that they already saved on their computer on they can do a google safe search for the pictures they want to use in their story. Once the students have the pictures they can begin recording the details of their story. Narrable directions Final directions Independent Practice: The students can complete their Narrables and turn them into this google form. Turn in your Narrable Afterwards the students can begin reading their e-textbook on the Old Kingdom and begin their reading notes. Homework: Students will complete their reading notes and complete questions 1-6 on pg. 147 in their reflection e- textbook Teacher Directions: To use Narrable sign up for the free teacher account. There is a guided tour every step of the way to create your Narrable. Prior to using Narrable check the recording features on the devices you will be using for this activity.
