Speakers included a.o. Rabobank (Netherlands), IFC (Zambia) and CLUSA (Mozambique). The conference
was attended by over 60 participants from Mozambique and abroad.
Maarten Susan (Banco Terra CEO) expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the conference and
explained that there is still a lot of work to do before the outline of a comprehensive support framework
emerges. In his words: “over 97% of the Agri sector in Mozambique consists of subsistence farmers.
Naturally, the attention of Banco Terra lies with this segment – and we shall be working closely with
extension providers and the Government on the organization and professionalization of Producer
Associations to make them eligible for bank financing. This is what we sometimes refer to as the “push”
approach. On the other hand, Emerging Farmers have passed an initial critical mass threshold, and have
often done so on their own merits. We believe that through a programme of combining access to finance
with extensive coaching and mentoring, productivity yields for farmers that meet pre-defined criteria can
increase dramatically. This would be the “pull” approach. The idea is that success breeds inspiration –
and other emerging farmers will step up to the plate”.
He mentioned that Banco Terra will continue its focus on Producer Associations, predominantly with the
assistance of its strategic partner GAPI, but at the same time is developing an Emerging Farmer
programme that will run in parallel. A next workshop on this theme will be organized in the 2nd half of
the year.
