Lesson Description

Title: Before and after using Numbers Grade Level: 2 Author: Mariah Ramsey

Domain, Cluster, Standard Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking 2.OA Cluster: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Standard: 1. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word
problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Objectives: Children will identify and write numbers that are one before and one after given
numbers. They will also count on and count back to identify missing numbers to 100.

Assessment/ Evaluation: Students will work independently to complete the worksheet based
on the objectives. Materials and Tools: Student work mat, hundred chart, computer, number cards

Motivation or Anticipatory set (create learning readiness): Have students stand in line
holding number cards. The rest of the students will have to put the numbers in order using the words before and after. There will be 4 groups with 4 in each group.

Teaching Procedures and Learning Activities:

1. After we complete the anticipatory set, we will work together to complete the front page of the work mat. We will find the before and after numbers of certain numbers using a hundreds chart. 2. Use the promethean board to watch a video of what we will be learning throughout the work mat. The teacher will ask many questions in regards to the video. 3. After the video, the students and teacher will do the guided practice together. Students will come to the large hundreds chart to circle the number and find the before and after number.

4. Teacher will ask students to go to the over head projector to write answers on the extra paper. This will help students visually see how their guided practice should look. 5. Teacher will grade the inside of their work mat. 6. Students will complete the back page of their work mat independently.

Adaptations and Accommodations

1. Special needs: Teacher will walk around and help students when the other students are doing their independent work.

Guided Practice (Included in the teaching procedures) Closure

1. How are the words before and after similar to greater than and less than? 2. How did the activity we did at the beginning help you in your work mat?

Independent Practice: Students will have one story problem with a drawing to complete, one
multiple choice question, one journal question that they complete based on the guided practice.

Assessment/ Evaluation (restate): Students will work independently to complete the

worksheet based on the objectives.

Standards for Mathematical Practice:

1. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others: each table explains why a certain number is before or after. 2. Model with mathematics: in their independent work they had to write an addition sentence that went along with a story. 3. Use appropriate tools strategically: we used a hundreds chart to solve our problems.
