Unite Title: Pumpkin Time! Lesson Title: How Big is That Pumpkin? Grade Level: Grade 1 Estimated Time of Lesson: 45 minutes

1. Activator/Engagement: Students will all measure their heights with a tape measure. This will give them a sense for what kind of measurements we use. 2. ILOs: Students will be able to describe the class pumpkins measurements 3. Materials: a. Large class pumpkin b. Scale c. Plastic bags d. Paper towels e. Spoon f. Measuring tapes 4. Procedure/Method/Plan: Students will measure their height with a measuring tape and record the number on board. Students will then begin the pumpkin worksheet by drawing the classroom pumpkin. After students have drawn the pumpkin they will get to write their estimates of the pumpkins weight and seed count. The class will share their predictions about the weight and number of seeds. After a group share the teacher will weigh the class pumpkin. Students will then fill in how much the pumpkin actually weights and write if their prediction was less than or greater than the actual weight. Next, the teacher will scoop out all the seeds and give each table a handful. Each table will count how many they have then the teacher will add them all together. o Differentiated Assignments: Above level group seeds into groups of five and count by fives. On level group seeds into groups of twos and count by twos Below level count seeds individually

Students will then write how many seeds the pumpkin actually has then write if their prediction had less than or more than the actual amount. Extension Activities: Students will take the seeds that were counted and place two of them into plastic bags with two damp cotton balls. Students will then decorate a pumpkin and cut out a window. The plastic bag with the seeds will then be stapled to the back to create a window to view how the seeds change over time.
