MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar through the membrane into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. Vinegar is 95 percent water and 5 percent acetic acid. The amount of water in an egg is about 74% so the water concentration is mainly in the vinegar. The water from the vinegar is going to diffuse into the egg. C2H4O2 CaCO3 PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 4 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14 15.6 16 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 275 265 270 OBSERVATIONS Egg is hard and is bubbly. Feels like rubber. Clear squishy. Fragile to hold. Still squishy

CONCLUSION In this lab we tested if osmosis would occur if we put an egg in a container filled with vinegar. The water diffused from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Then the egg expanded by 2.0 cm in the past 4 days. Water flowed into the egg because the 5% of acetic acid that was in the vinegar dissolved the shell off of the egg. The egg had a selective permeable membrane that only allowed water to get through the membrane. Overall our group had 0.9 cm less than the average of the whole period. And had a difference of 0.7 with the average of the whole 7th grade. My hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS 1) The shell of the egg dissolved because the vinegar contains acetic acid and the shell has calcium carbonate and the acid broke apart the shell with a chemical reaction. 2) The difference of the two groups is 3.4 centimeters. The rate in which group 3 had been 1.125 cm per day. The rate in which group 7 had been 0.275 cm per day. These two groups got different results because the concentration of water might have been different between the two groups. 3) Cells need water because it helps keep the cells shape, helps with chemical reactions, and water transports food and waste throughout the cell.
