MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar, through the selectively permeable membrane, and into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The acetic acid in the vinegar will react to the eggshell and dissolve it. This will expose the membrane, letting water flow freely into the egg. Because the vinegar, which is 95% water, has a higher concentration then the egg, which is 75% water, water from the vinegar will flow into the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.5 14.5 LIQUID LEVEL (mL) 300 280 OBSERVATIONS 50 mL displacement bubbles are collecting on the shell 225 after removal egg was rubbery and slimy egg was foamy 200 after removal egg was yellow egg was rubbery

GRAPH CONCLUSION In this lab we were investigating osmosis, which is when water molecules flow from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. We put an egg into 250 mL of vinegar to see if the water molecules would flow through the eggs selectively permeable membrane and into the egg or out. In four days, the vinegar (weak acid) dissolved the eggshell, exposing the selectively permeable membrane, letting water flow into the egg. Our groups egg expanded .2 cm less than the 7th grade average. I hypothesized that the water molecules in the vinegar with flow into the egg. My hypothesis was correct 100% of the time. ANALYSIS 1. The acetic acid in the vinegar (weak acid) dissolved the eggshell (calcium carbonate), exposing the selectively permeable membrane. 2. The difference between the results of group 3 and 7 is 3.4 cm. Group 3s rate of expansion was 1.125 cm a day. Group 7s rate of expansion was .275 cm a day. Group 3s expanded 0.85 cm more than group 7s egg every day. The groups could have gotten different results because they have incorrect measurements. Since the beakers were different, some of the egg could have been exposed differently to the vinegar and to the air. 3. Cells need water because chemical reactions take place in the presence of water. Also, cells need water to keep their size, shape, and temperature.
