MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is diffusion to water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The water will go into the egg because the acidity of the vinegar will break the shell. Once the shell is broken it will be easy to put water in the egg, there are so many water molecules in the vinegar, that they will be forced into the egg after a certain period of time. This will happen because the 95% water in the vinegar is more highly concentrated than the 74% water in the egg. This will force the water from the vinegar in the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 4 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.4 16.8 16.3 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 325 290 260 OBSERVATIONS 75 ml displacement. CONCLUSION In this lab we were investigation the process commonly known as osmosis. After the vinegar dissolved the eggshell, the process of osmosis started to happen. The water in the vinegar defused into an area of high concentration from the vinegar to an area of low concentration through the cell membrane into the egg, causing it to expand 3.4 cm. After 4 days our egg (group 3) expanded .9 cm more

than the average 7th Grade. I hypothesized that the water molecules in the vinegar would go though the cell membrane into the egg. My hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS 1. The vinegar is a weak acid that dissolved the eggshell. The weak acid reacted with the calcium carbonate. When the vinegar reacted to the shell CO2 was produced. 2. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded 3.4 more than group 7. Group 7 expanded 1.1 cm through out the course of 4 days. The average rate of egg expansion through the whole 7th grade was 1.481481481 These groups got different results in the experiment because the groups didnt measure right. 3. Cells need water because it helps them carry out their daily uses and needs. For example the cytoplasm in the cell consists mainly of water and dissolved nutrients, wastes, ions, proteins and other molecules.
