Day Two Put six counters under the doc. camera. Have a student roll a dice and take that many away. Do more as time allows.

Day Three Same as yesterday except have all student have white boards. After the dice is rolled and you take that many away have all students try to write the matching number sentence on their white boards. Do more as time allows. Questions:

Anticipated Student Responses:

Questions: How many counters are left? Can you help me write a number sentence that matches what we just did? Example, if the dice roll was a 2 you would write: 6-2=4 Anticipated Student Responses:

Anticipated Student Responses:

What will I do? Use this as a preassessment. Have students either do on a scrap piece of paper to collect or on white boards and record if they are successful or not.

What will I do?

What will I do? Watch what your students are writing to see who is struggling. If many students are struggling take another day and consider acting out the subtraction sentences.

Day Four Make a seven cube train with 4 red and 3 green. Tell students there are 7 cubes. I know that 4 of them are red so how many are green? Do another as time allows.

Day Five Same as yesterday but have all students have white boards so they can all try to write the matching number sentence.

Day Six Tell the students the number of the day is 8 and place that number of counters into a paper bag. Have a student reach into the bag and take out some counters. The rest of the students need to figure out how many they think are still left in the bag. Questions: Ask students who tell you how many are left in the bag to tell the class how they know or how they figured it out.

Questions: Who can tell me a subtraction number sentence to go with these cubes: 7-4=3.

What will I do? Observe which students are understanding and which are still struggling.

What will I do?

Day Seven Same as Day six but today you will write the number sentence that goes with it. If 8 counters in the bag and a student pulls 3 out, the class needs to figure out how many are still in the bag. 8 - ___ = 3

Day Eight Start with a cup with 5 counters in (2 yellow, 3 red). Do not tell the students how many. Take out the two yellow and show the students. Have a student look to see how many are still in the cup (3). Have all students figure out how many were in the cup to start with.

Day Nine Same as Day 8 but show the students how a subtraction sentence fits the activity. ____ - 2 = 3. Student need to fill in how many started in the cup.

Questions: Have student model their thinking about how many are still in the bag.

Do another example and have all students try to fill in the missing number. Example: Do with different number of counters if ___cubes in cup 4 that we took out = you have time. 3 left in the cup. Questions: Questions: If there are two yellow that you can see How many cubes were in the cup to and Mikey says there are 3 red still in start with? the cup, how many were in the cup to start with?
