Where to Start Word Test

Having trouble knowing where to start? Use the word lists on page 155-159. Always start at the list below the grade level. For example: Kindergarteners and First grade start on the Beginning List. Second grade start on level 1 etc. If child scores between 16-20, go to the next list. If child scores below 16, then use the chart to see the level you should begin testing.

Fluency
Here are the Fluency expectations for the various levels. Use the fluency rubric to help you assign a numerical value.

Know When to Start and Stop

As you are testing, use the chart below to assess whether you should continue to the next level, or stop. We are required to find an Independent Level and an Instructional Level. Please note, that students may have more than one instructional level. Use your best judgment to decide whether to continue to the next level.

Making the Assessment Conference Efficient

Starting Point
Knowing where to start will save the student from having to read numerous texts. Use last years reading records to get an indication of where to start.

Organized Materials

Keep you assessment books and Recording forms well organized. Extra copies of the protocols can be found in the office.

Familiarity with Books

When you know the assessment books and key understanding well, you can move the comprehension conversation along briskly.

Fluency

If your readers are fluent, the reading will take less time.

Hard Text

As soon as the students text reading shows the number of errors indicative of hard text, discontinue reading. There is no need for the student to struggle through the whole text.

Comprehension Conversation

If the text is hard, do not include the comprehension conversation.
