Reliability is defined as
“RELIABILITY IS THE PROBABILITY OF AN ITEM PERFORMING ITS INTENDED
FUNCTION OVER A GIVEN PERIOD OF TIME UNDER THE OPERATING
CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED”

Methods of Reliability Analysis

 FIRST ORDER SECOND MOMENT METHOD.
 POINT ESTIMATE METHOD.
 HASOFER LIND METHOD.
 MONTE CARLO SIMULATION TECHNIQUE.

Analysis Procedure

First Order Second Moment Method
(FOSM)

FOSM derives its name from the fact that it is based on first order Taylor series
approximation of linear function of random variable and uses the second order statistics
moments.

Analysis Procedure
1.Collection of Data of the Problem

COV 5% for Geometric properties and for live and dead loads .15 to .3 and for earthquake
loads it is taken b/w 10-20
Standard deviations () = Mean Value * COV

2. Developing Load and resistance models

Resistance Model
As per Limit State of flexure (I.S 456)

Load Model,
S = , Bending moment.

Reliability Analysis by
First Order Second Moment Method (FOSM)

 Partially differentiating the above equation w.r.t each variable above and
substituting the values, we get ……
Using Normal Distribution Table

Probability of failure: - Pf = 1 – 1-

1-0.9997= .0003 = .03%

4. Results and Discussions
 Results are compared with the Standard values to be obtained as specified by NBS,
USA.
 For strength above 3 is safe.
 For serviceability above 2.2 is safe.
 For the problem, the result obtained is 3.43, and it is safe.
 Probability of failure of this element is 0.03%.
