The student learning assessment contains data from four different curriculum units and lessons where a pre

and post test was given to students in order to measure their specific learning. The core curricula areas that were assessed include: language arts, math, science and social studies. As the teacher candidate, I conducted the instruction for each curriculum unit and lesson and recorded the scores on graphs which visually showed the students scores. I also chose the subject of language arts to break the data out and analyze it for students with an Individual Education Plans (IEPs). All together, the project contains four narrative reflections for each core curricula area that included a summary of my interpretation of the learning and the impact on both the students and the class growth. I learned a great deal from this project and how to use various assessment procedures in order for the students to accurately show their learning. There are several ways students can be assessed in order to see whether they are learning the content or if they need more time and instruction. One highly effective way to assess is norm-referenced assessment where students scores are assessed with other scores and one example of this is the SATs. Another type of assessment is the criterion-referenced assessment where test questions are based on a set of criteria or standards that need to be met. A good example of a criterion-referenced test is the FCAT right here in Florida. Surveys or KWL charts are also excellent ways to informally assess students knowledge of content because this can show the students prior knowledge along with what they will learn from teacher instruction. Another interesting assessment used is the diagnostic tests, for example IQ tests, which can measure a students learning capabilities and can label students for long periods of time. There are two different types of assessment groupings which are formal and informal assessments which both can be effective for measuring student learning. Formal assessments

include the SATs and FCATs in school and informal assessments can be surveys and games. There are also types of assessments called summative and formative which are pretty simple to understand. Summative assessment is used at the end of instruction such as final exams to showcase what students have learned in a certain lessons or units. Formative assessment is used during instruction such as quizzes and homework in order to show the teacher if the students are on track and understanding the content. For this assessment of student learning project, I used four different multiple choice assessments for my data and each where used for math, science, social studies and language arts. I used the same assessment for my pre- and post test in order to accurately measure the students learning and growth or where students needed more instruction. The math unit was about perimeter and area and how to use these formulas for various measuring scenarios. The students had no prior knowledge of this Unit before my instruction and my data shows growth for most students. I believe if I had more time with this Unit and more concentrated time, every student would have shown growth on their post tests. The science unit covered estuaries, life cycles and the Mudflats. I instructed the students from their science text book and we also were able to learn the content on a field trip to the Mudflats for a day. This was a great experience for the students and I believe that the score improvement from the pre- to post test was partially from my instruction and the field trip as well. The social studies lesson covered the Civil War and how Florida participated in this war. This was a rather large lesson in an even larger unit on how societies change and what people contribute to societies. I created the assessment for this lesson and the students really seemed to understand the content after my instruction.

The last subject, language arts, that was used for my data was a reading unit on How Night Came from the Sea. This was a mythological story where students learned about generalizing and visualizing throughout the Unit. This data was probably the best out of the four showing student growth from my instruction. I also created the assessment for this subject area and the students really understood the content after my instruction. Every students scores improved on the post test and to this day the students tell me that they remember my assessment and what they learned in that unit. In conclusion, I learned a lot from this student learning assessment project and how to accurately graph student growth. I learned about various assessment procedures such as: normreferenced assessment, criterion-referenced assessment, surveys or KWL charts, diagnostic tests, formal and informal assessments, and summative and formative assessments. I also learned about my own assessment data and the things I would need to do in order to accurately assess students learning. I plan to use every type of informal and formal assessment when I become a teacher because it is so important to know if your students are learning the content so that they may be successful in school.
