1. Formal/informal lecture During the in-room class time the teacher is calling the students to the rug for the reading lecture. Her goal is to go over the vocabulary words on the white board. The students then read with the teacher as she pointed out the words as she read them. She was having trouble getting the students attention to finish the majority of her lecture. They were wound up and not interested in learning today. As we finished the lecture the teacher dismissed the students to go back to their seats and get out AR books or ipads. 2. Demonstration In second grade lessons are very short and concise. The demonstration was in the math lesson. The teacher used the white board and the students sat at their desk and worked on the worksheet provided by the teacher. After the teacher showed the students the new strategy worked on the worksheet and she walked around to check understanding of the lesson. Most of the students understood and completed the lesson but there were a couple that needed some assistance or one- on- one instruction. For those that finished early they were instructed to work on the IXL website. 3. Small group discussion/activity The teacher created 4 small groups with different activities so she could have a more personal group at the table with her to focus on a particular activity. The group at the table was able to talk about the math problems and ask questions if they had any. The difficulty she had was the small groups that were away from the table. They tended to get louder and louder until it disrupted her small group. 4. Large group discussion/activity The large group activity was interesting, the teacher had the students get out the ipads from the ipad cart. Each student had an individual ipad and knew how to get on. If the students forgot how to get on the teacher had a container with index cards. The students had their id and passwords on them. After the students were ready with the ipads the teacher instructed the students to get on a blank screen and then they practiced math questions as a group. Each student wrote their answer on the screen of the ipad. After the students wrote their answers on the ipad they raised their ipad so the teacher could see it to make sure they all understood the questions. 5. Discovery/experimental/inquiry The teacher did a quick science lesson about magnets. The students were each given several magnets and they were instructed to work with the magnets and create a number attaching different shaped magnets to each other. As they finished they raised their hand and the teacher

walked around and commented on the results of the magnets. 6. Questioning During the reading groups the teacher began asking questions about the story. I did not notice very much interaction during this time. I think possibly it was because this class is very chatty. The teacher was very careful not to encourage rabbit trails. The students were involved in the lesson because the teacher made sure that it pertained to the students lives. 7. Practice/drill Practice and/or drill seems to be used in either math or spelling. In this case she was drilling math problems. This was more of a review of simple math such as 1+1=? The class answers 2 etc. Most of the class was with her but not for long this activity was right before recess and the class was restless. She was trying to do a quick review before they went outside.
