KICKOFF MEETING

What is Sustainability?

What does sustainability look like?

Less wasted material? Less energy use? Less harmful materials? Less evasive extracting techniques? Fewer emissions?

LESS BAD
Is this Sustainability?

What is humanitys relationship to the Earth?

Less bad model

Humanity is seen as a plight to the earth and to each other

The best we can do is zero

Zero emissions Zero impact

ZERO GOAL = ZERO LIFE

What is Sustainability Really?

Waste = Food

Technical Cycle Biological Cycle

Value Based Design

Responsible Systems Thinking

Work Together Local solutions to local problems

Celebrate Diversity

Goal = 100% Good

More Good Model

Humanity CAN be positive We celebrate our waste/emissions

What we dispel can be used as nutrients for other forms of life

Celebrate our growth

Meet the needs of growing populations

Waste = Food

Philosophies

Its not just about getting better at what we do addressing impacts throughout our supply chain its about striving for the best, creating value for the business and innovating for a better world. Nike Inc.
How do we go about design in such a way that we love all children of all species for all time? William McDonough, Architect

Responsible Systems Thinking

SEEING THE SYSTEM WHILE WORK TOGETHER

Seeing the System

IS THIS A SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM?

Seeing the System

Working Together: Coke Sees the System!

2004 Southern India experienced a 3 year drought. Water from deep aquifer allowed coke to continue to bottle

Unrelated to surface water droughts

Rather than resting on fact that they do not directly contribute to water depletions, Coke decides to research the issue.

Depletion of aquifers Risks of cost rising Increased competition for water

Getting to the Root of the Problem

Compiled crisis reports Gathered input from 250 well positioned employees on projections and local relations Information not useful in spurring action within Coke.

All information gathered in broad text but not at individual levels

Operations could NOT act

No clear framework to work

Created workshops in 95% of local bottling plants in order to gather more specific information which would help to create a frame-work

Coke partners with WWF

Coke resized that they need expertise in understanding the broader systemic issues of ecology and watersheds WWF relation with Coke shifts from philanthropic to commercial partners Powerful alliance

Cokes attention for operating detail and efficiencies Business and Buying Power WWF scientific knowledge Pie in the sky thinking, values and expertise

Accomplishments

Develops new way of thinking about total water consumption

Water footprint system Started to see how water usage was in ever step of the system

200 liters of water go into 1 liter of Coke

Encouraged Regions and Municipalities to understand watersheds in comprehensive, complete terms

Account for all major uses of water

The goal becomes even bigger than Coke and WWF can accomplish on their own

Sustainability Beyond Engineering

Sustainability is a multi-disciple issue

To tackle is to engage everyone Engineers are put in position to add Value to design solutions

ITS A BIG TASK, BUT ENGINEERS CAN MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE
