Exploration of the need and evaluation

Why are you making the item of jewellery? I have decided to make a piece of jewellery for a way to express my personality and style especially at this age I believe it will succeed, being 14 years old all girls go through the same experiences as each other. I have based this design on the materials and equipment I find easy to conduct, like polymer clay. Who is this for? In order to find out how to create a piece of jewellery that will succeed and become popular I conducted a survey that asked question about what the majority of 11-15 year olds look for when buying jewellery, examples of questions I asked where age, colour, materials, character etc. This will help me finalised my design as it will limit my ideas in order to cover the majority of foundations young ladies look for in jewellery. There are many factors I have to keep in mind let alone the foundations girls like in there piece, they are: These factors include: Age: The age group I am targeting is 11-15 year olds Gender: Female Personality: I am planning to design my piece so that it suits every bodys personality. (Classy, dressy, elegant) Interest: The piece of jewellery I have in mind is going to suit girls that have an interest in their faith and the colours green/aqua and pink. Colour: The colour I am including in my design that will be loved my young 11-15 year old girls are, green/aqua and pink. Below are the answers from the survey that will help be create and conduct a successful piece.

Research and investigation of existing designs

I have constructed the following collage (of 20 pictures) to express different types of styles I would like to include in my final design. As you can see in the collage there many different jewellery pieces for example, necklaces, bracelets, rings, earings, head pieces, anklets and connected bracelet to rings. From the survey I constructed in exploration of the need and evaluation I found out that the majority of 11-15 year olds prefer a bracelet connected to a ring, because of this I have decided too incorporate a similar design from the collage in some area of my final product. Another feature I would like to include is a religious symbol like a cross.

[5]

Bracelet connected to a ring

I have chosen this design as it includes a religious symbol incorporated in a piece (Bracelet connected to a ring) that is mostly loved by the age group (11-15) I am trying to target. (Resulted in the survey)

The colour pink is very popular among the age group of 11-15 years old which is who I am trying to target.

I like this piece as it includes a religious symbol which I would like to include in my final design. The colour of the cross is light pink which the majority of girls in my survey chose.

The structure of the design is easy to make, allowing me to have time to correct, change and perfect the piece in any areas I lack.

The chain is very thin, which means it is light and easy to carry around. It is a very classy and elegant piece which is preferred (by the age group of 1115 years old). One thing I will have to change is the gold chain to silver as it preferred by the age group I am targeting.

Summary
From this research I have decided I will like to include a religious symbol coloured in light pink and incorporate in one area of my final design. The reasoning for this is that the majority of girls in my survey chose that they prefer a religious symbol in there style of a piece of jewellery.

[6]

Necklace
I have chosen a necklace as results from my survey above showed that a necklace was favoured second. This piece of jewellery expresses a lot of personality and style that 1115 year old will look for when buying a piece of jewellery, the colour is very vibrant and interesting allowing it to be mixed and match with many other colours and styles. Black rubber chord already provided by the school. The colour aqua is very popular in the age group of 11-15 year olds shown in survey. Hook clips preferred by 11-15 year olds.

Colour is easy to make (mix, blue, yellow and white) out of polymer clay, which is a material that must be used in our final product. Majority of 11-15 year old prefer a religious symbol (Cross) in there piece of jewellery sown in the survey.

The shape (cross) is easy to mould out of polymer clay.

Summary: From this research, I have discovered that I would like to include the
colours pink and aqua in some area of my finally piece along with a religious symbol, preferably a cross. I have chosen these colours as they go well together, are a good match and are both easy to make. The reason why I have decided to incorporate a religious symbol in my design is because it is preferred to be the pendent in my piece then another symbol (resulted in my survey by 11-15 year olds). Another reason why prefer a religious symbol in my final piece of jewellery as in my religion we are all brought up to wear a piece of jewellery on us that symbolises our religion (Lebanese Maronite) , that is holy or relates to God. This way I can wear a classy, dressy piece which still that has a meaning behind it.

Case study Section 1 Design process

1. Read Evaluating success. List the financial and personal rewards that Dinosaur Designs' partners can enjoy because of their company's success. According to the Dinosaur designs they believe that success can mean many thing, the personal achievement of accomplishing work with friends can really make beautiful objects and pieces which are valued by others, or the freedom and financial prizes of organising your own successful design company. Stephen, Liane and Louise do not just view the success of their business by popularity but believe success is the amount of personal joy they get when designing and conducting products and objects that or appreciated by the public. 2. Look at the Dinosaur Designs' career path. What things indicate the company's success and popularity? One way in which they figured how popular and successful there business is, is by a worker that is working for them currently that told Stephen, Liane and Louise about how long it took her when she was a little girl to save up enough money to buy her first piece of jewellery from there business which had been waiting for, for a while. This showed Stephen, Liane and Louise how much their work means in some peoples life. Another sign that indicated that Stephen, Liane and Louises company is successful and popular is the invitations they get to design and conduct projects for charities to be actioned off. This showed them that many people love the work that they do and appreciate it. 3. Develop a flow chart of a design process undertaken by the team at Dinosaur Designs.

[11]

4. Dinosaur Designs uses specialist designers for some aspects of their work, for example, architects and graphic designers. Compare the design process used to design Dinosaur Designs' jewellery and that used by the product designer Angelo Kotsis. What are the similarities and differences between the two processes? Dinosaur Designs have many steps in there design process. Firstly they start off by building a prototype plasticine, they then create a mould and cast the resin. Thirdly, they mix colour into clear (transparent) resin and create items. Once this is done they pour the resin into the mould and allow the items to set. They then make final adjustments to the item so that it can be profitable. Angelo Kotsis begins his design process for torches by collecting inspiration and brainstorming ideas for ways he can design different styles of torches. He visualises his ideas by creating models using the 3D printer and manufactures them to see the final result and to test them. The two design processes descripted above are similar as both designers have a certain way in which they create and design there products this is so they are aesthetically appealing. However there is also a difference in the ways each designer creates there work, this is, Dinosaur Designs have an idea in how they want their object to turn out before they begin their design process. Whereas Angelo Kotsis needs to search for inspiration to collect ideas for ways his torch can be constructed. 5. The Dinosaur Designs team are passionate about their work. They use a particular language to communicate their process of design, for example, hand-felt and finessing. Select these words and in the context of the passage, discuss what the designer means by them. Hand felt: Dinosaur Designs define the word hand felt, as a technique were they use their hands to feel areas of an item and find out how it feels and adjust areas needed. An example is resin, they have found out by using this technique that a resin item is usually rough and has harsh edges. This allows them to know what areas of the item they have adjust so that it can be successful. Finessing: Finessing is a technique that the girls use as it means they incorporate many elements in their designs such as, is the item fashionable? Is it good quality? They do this so that it can succeed and be profitable and target many peoples attention my not having a piece that is totally different then whats happening out there.

Section 2 Factors influencing design

1. Visit the Gallery of work. Touch, feel and look are important to Dinosaur Designs. Look at three images and describe them in terms of the elements of design, such as line, colour and texture. There are many effective elements in this design, they are shown through: Colour: There colours of the vases and cushion are very bright and sold; attracting peoples attention, the colour blue and green gives a lot of light to the room bringing relaxation and flow of air. Texture: The texture [12] of the vases feel and look very smooth, making the energy of the room calm.

Line: The line technique on the cushion is very eye-catching as the colours and texture is vibrant lighting up the room.

Colour: There are many colours included in this piece, green, blue, yellow, red and orange. They are very vibrant and exciting which stands out in the room. Texture: The texture of this piece looks very unusual, odd and rough. Line: The colourful circles are positioned in a straight line, making it look like they are dangling from the ceiling. Colour: The colours red, green, yellow and orange compliment the design of each vase. The vases is made out of resin which is transparent, making it look like glass. Texture: The texture looks quite smooth and soft creating a relaxing mood. Line: The lines on the vases are curvy and wide.

1. Dinosaur Designs manufactures all their resin pieces in their own studio. What kinds of Occupational Health & Safety practices might they have to consider for employees working in a studio or workshop environment? Dinosaur Designs have to consider protection towards their workers when dealing with resin. The process of resin is extremely dangerous; to ignore any problems they must have a healthy working environment, adequate facilities, adequate information instruction and training, substances in a safe condition and harmless systems of work.

Section 3 Roles of designers

1. The Dinosaur Designs team received training in the visual arts as well as professional art studies. Suggest an alternative career path that might give you the skills necessary for designing objects and/or jewellery. Alternative career paths teach you the skills to be able to design objects and jewellery including crafting which enables you to learn the basics of how to create and conduct jewellery. This alternative path career teaches you how to design, conduct and repair objects and jewellery that includes functional and creative qualities such as, working with leather, glass, ceramics, textiles, wood, metal etc. 2. Jewellery design is a design specialisation of the area of study: Products. What other design specialisations does Dinosaur Designs work in? Dinosaur Designs create a wide range of pieces including home ware. These pieces are very popular and profitable as the designs are very unique, creative and imaginative.

[13]

3. List some of the reasons people wear jewellery. Describe your favourite piece of jewellery and the reasons it is important to you. There are various reasons for why people were jewellery; this could be because they are wearing it as a fashion statement, may be symbolic to them or their religion, to express their wealth or personality. My favourite piece of jewellery is this chain that has a crucifix on it and a pendent which has the three Lebanese Maronite saints printed on it (Saint Rafqua, Nimatullah, Charbel). The reason for this is because this piece was the last piece of jewellery I received from my grandfather, before he died. It is also my favourite piece as the three most important saints in my life that I dedicate my prayers to are on the pendant.

4. Identify the contribution Dinosaur Designs makes to the improvement of everyday life. Dinosaur Designs contribute hugely to the improvement of everyday life, they do this by inspiring the youth by telling them to dream big and believe in themselves to be able to achieve anything they want. They express positive energy among the youth to encourage them to strive for something they want. Dinosaur Designs have created jewellery which has become special and precious to peoples life as it may mean something personal to them. Dinosaur Design also creates home ware pieces which people purchase as it may suit or express their personality which they will like to show off in their home.

Section 4 Generating ideas

1. Stephen Ormandy of Dinosaur Designs describes the importance of sketching for generating ideas. Practice your sketching skills for your next project. Keep a small pocket notebook and pencil with you at all times and draw thumbnails of any ideas you come across.

[14]

2. Identify some of the methods used by Dinosaur Designs to generate creative ideas. About the designer. Stephen, Liane and Louise spend a lot of their time trying to create ideas that they can incorporated in some designs. They spend most Fridays night at their parents home making jewellery and painting fabrics to help them come up with ideas, also remembering to aim that there ideas and designs must suit the latest fashion trends so that the item can succeed. By following this method they have been inspired in many aspects which make them produce new, unique, creative ideas.

Section 5 Selects, analyses, presents and applies research

1. Experimenting and testing of design ideas was important for the development of Dinosaur Designs' first innovative products for Paddington markets. Describe the experimentation and testing that was carried out. Throughout the time Stephen, Liane and Louise spent selling their unique items at Paddington markets they would judge there products based on popularity. By following this method they realised that there jewellery was succeeding extremely well as pieces where selling awfully fast. This encouraged them to start creating new and more jewellery pieces and adding hand-painted resin. 2. Dinosaur Designs are influenced to a certain extent by current trends. What sources of information would be particularly useful for jewellery designers? There were many trends in which were useful for Stephen, Liane and Louise which inspired them to ideas that were sketched, created and tested. Some trends that inspired them to create there pieces were arts, paintings, history, culture, sculptures, reality and the natural world.

Section 6 Mixed material technologies

1. If you were to design a small pendant how could it be mass produced? Research the different ways in which you could produce multiple copies of this object. Unfortunately there are not many ways in which you can mass-produce a pendant, the most easily and common way is a 3D printer. Painfully the 3D printer takes a while when the object (pendant) is big or detailed to print; because of this you would need several 3D printer machines to mass produce a pendant in a short period of time. Large amount of effective workers will also be a help when mass producing a pendant in a short period of time, also giving Stephan, Liane and Louise time to design and create more pendants. 2. For the small pendant research how it can be finished. How does it affect the visual appeal of the object? Every time you mass produce an object it will not look like the original copy, this is because workers will lack off towards the end of copying every pendant. To make each mass produce copy look finish, glazing, beading and wiring will do the job. This will then make its visual appeal of the object costly and good quality.
