The Characters of Romeo and Juliet Montagues Vs.

Capulets in Verona, Italy

Romeo Montague
Age: 16-17 Impulsive, immature, sensitive, and passionate.

Only child of Lord and Is in love Lady with Rosaline Montague at the beginning of the play.

Benvolio

Lord Montagues Nephew and Romeos cousin Makes a genuine effort to keep the peace between the Capulets and Montagues in public though Mercutio believes he has a nasty temper in private Spends a majority of the play trying to help Romeo take his mind off ROSALINE (even after Romeo has fallen in love with Juliet)

Lord and Lady Montague

Lord: Shows concern for his son (Particularly at the beginning of the play when Romeo is overcome with melancholy) . Bitter enemy to Capulet for reasons unknown! Lady: Romeos mother. Wishes her husband would not fight with the Capulets.

Mercutio

Kinsman to the Prince (Related) Close friend to Romeo Loves word play like puns and sexual innuendos Overflows with imagination, wit, and jokes Is tired of Romeos romanticized views on love Mercutio tries to convince Romeo that love is a simple matter of sexual appetite

Balthazar
Romeos trusted Servant

Romeos confidant/secret keeper Always has a plan Hopes his plan with Romeo and Juliet will bring peace to Verona End the feud. An expert in mystical potions and herbs

Friar Lawrence

The Prince/ Price Escalus


Prince of Verona Is fed up with the Montague and Capulet feud and will put a stop to it at all costs. Relation to Paris and Mercutio

Juliet Capulet
Age: Almost 14 Only child of Lord and Lady Capulet Was for the most part raised by her Nurse Parents are debating if she is ready to be married (to Paris) Begins the play as a nave child who has thought very little about marriage/love, has very little freedom. Demonstrates courage and trust once she meets/falls in love with Romeo

Tybalt
Juliets HOT-HEADED cousin (Has a temper!!) He is vain, fashionable, is quick to become violent. HATES Montagues

Lord and Lady Capulet


Lord: Loves his daughter as she is his only child and heir to his fortune. He is not good with feelings and simply wishes to have his way. He is quick to rage when respect or propriety are lacking. Lady: Was married and had Juliet around 13. Is eager to see her daughter married. Does not really know her daughter or even how to deal with her.

Nurse

Juliets former wet-nurse Breastfed her as a baby Now her confidant and more her mother than Lady Capulet Long-winded (loves to talk!), vulgar Shes comic relief as she have many inappropriate remarks and speeches. Wants Juliet to be happy and to marry a handsome husband Wants whats best for her.

Capulet servant. Peter Is illiterate (cant read) Will invite guests to Capulets feast early on in the play and will later escort the Nurse to meet Romeo

Paris
Kinsman of the Prince (Related) Suitor of Juliet Very presumptuous Often acts of though he and Juliet are already married.

Apothecary
Lives in Mantua (Another town, near Verona) Is poor so money often clouds his moral judgment Sells potions, herbs, and poison

Montagues servant Fights with Sampson and Gergory (Capulets) in the first scene of the play NOTE: In the Leonardo DiCaprio movie Abram is a servant to the Capulets

Abram

Servants to Capulet Provoke Montagues men (Abram) into fighting at the beginning of the play NOTE: In the Leonardo DiCaprio movie they are servants to Montague

Sampson and Gregory

Rosaline
Romeo is infatuated with her at the beginning of the play She is never shown, only spoke of Is said to be very beautiful Sworn to live a life of chastity*
