Student Teaching: IMB Reading Lesson (4th Grade)

Subject: Reading Central Focus: Common themes in literature that were developed differently.

Essential Standard/Common Core Objective: Date taught: March 20, 2014 RL.4.1, RL.4.2, RL4.3, RL.4.4, RL.4.5, RL.4.6, RL.4.9, RL.4.9, RF.4.4, SL.4.1, L.4.5, L.4.6 Daily Lesson Objective: Students will be able to determine the themes of a story and make connections with other stories of the same theme but understand that they are developed differently. 21st Century Skills: Academic Language Demand (Language Function and -Critical Thinking Vocabulary): -Collaboration and Communication -Theme -Plot -Characters -Setting Prior Knowledge: What is theme?

Activity 1. Focus and Review 2. Statement of Objective for Student

Description of Activities and Setting The lesson will begin during the soar class period of the day. The teacher will read: Mooses Loose Tooth by Jacqueline A. Clarke and The Night Before the Tooth Fairy by Natasha Wing. Students will make connections in common themes but understand that the stories were developed differently. The class will be in whole group instruction and a discussion about theme will take place. What is theme? How do we determine the theme of a story? Remind them of the stories that we read during soar. (Write down answers) Ask questions such as: How are they the same? How are they different? What do you think the theme is of story A? Story B? Do you see a connection? Are the stories the same? *List similarities and differences as well as the theme so that students have a visual to record thoughts. Explain to the class how themes can be the same but story lines may be different. Themes can be the same in different stories. It is important for readers to recognize the common themes but understand that they are developed differently. Some techniques that can help us recognize themes may include: -Charts -Venn-diagrams -Look at setting, time, place -Look at characters -Recall other stories -Consider different perspectives -Look at relationships, trials, pressures, how they respond etc.

3. Teacher Input

Ask students to add to list. Make an anchor chart with the class. Students will be split into 4 groups. Each group will have childrens stories to accompany. The stories should have the same themes but the story line/characters/setting should all be different. For examples: 4 versions of Cinderella have a common theme but have different components. -Rhodophis (Egyptian Cinderella) -Yeh Shen (Chinese Cinderella) -Cinderella (Play Version) -Bigfoot Cinderella Each group will be instructed to read the story. (Each person should take a turn reading. Suggest one person reads a page, pass the next person reads a page and so on until the book is finished.) With each story will be 4 sticky notes titled theme, characters, setting, and issues. After each group reads the book talk with your group and discuss a these topics and record onto sticky notes.. During this time the teacher should circulate the room asking questions and helping to guide groups. After each group has read and discussed a theme the class should come back to whole group. The teacher should ask each group to place their sticky notes in the appropriate section on a chart. (The students will place all the character sticky notes under the title characters. Repeat for each topic.) The class will visibly be able to see the different characters, settings, issues and themes. Discuss each section with the class. *The story type should be addressed as a whole group. Explain this can be classified as nonfiction/fiction or genre. Discuss both with the class. For example: Cinderellas theme Even when things are hard stay positive, for dreams do come true. Class did you all read the same story? Then how did we end up with the same theme? Were the characters the same? Was the setting the same? Was the plot the same? No. Reiterate that themes may be reoccurring in different stories. Students will then be instructed to return to their desks and pull out their books for book club. They will be instructed to read to meet their deadline for the day. Encourage students to use sticky notes and make notes comparing different themes/story lines in their book club books to other pieces of work they are familiar with that have the same general theme. 15-20 Min.

Students will be assessed formatively through questioning and the notes made in their book. 6. Assessment Methods of Based on the discussions and questioning, the teacher should get a general idea of who has all objectives/skills: grasped the concept. Students lets look back at our anchor chart and remind ourselves of some of the things that can help us determine our themes and how they relate to similar text. We must remember that even though text may have the same theme, they are developed differently through characters, setting, relationships, pressure etc. 3-5 Min.

7. Closure

Assessment will be done formatively through questioning and the notes made in their book. Based on the discussions and questioning, the teacher should get a general idea of who has grasped the concept. Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations: Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations: Students who struggle with reading should be pulled Pre-make groups with a variety of reading levels and book during independent practice to discuss the themes of clubs. This gives an opportunity to work with a new group and their books. The teacher should be prepared to ask have a good balance of understanding. questions and help guide theme discovery.
