Lesson 2 Rates and Unite Rate Date: na Subject: Math Grade: 6

Goals: Students will be able to understand, explain and fluently apply their knowledge of rates and unit rates to solve real world problems. Common Core Standard Math RP 6 Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b _0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is cup of flour for each cup of sugar. We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of 1 $5 per hamburger.

Time Lesson Duration 3 Days Day 1

Opening/Framing the Lesson/Introduction/Early Assessment

Monitor/Feedback

First, begin the lesson by asking the students by Have a 2 students showing them a map from Google Maps and ask volunteer response to them if they know the time it take to travel from Los first inquiry. Angels to San Francisco. Then give explain to students that to be able to know this answer theyt need to calculate the rate a speed one is drive to answer the question. Then explain to the students the key terms for the current lesson are Rate and Unit Rate. Afterwards, tell the student that rate is a measure on one quantity per unit value of another quantity. Then tell students that rate and unit rates are used in other parts of our daily lives as in addition to traveling. Provide the students with the example of ones pulse being measured as a rate. Tell the students that the rate being measure when taking a person pulse is heartbeats per minute. Then, measure my pulse for 2 minutes and write it on the board as a ratio in fraction form. Explain to the students that a Unit Rate has the denominator of one, for one unit. Therefore, the number of beats written over one minute would be the unit rate (67 heartbeats per 1minute). I will then use the fraction for my heartbeat and model for the students how to simplify the ratio to a unit rate. After explaining the key terms have the students will use their smart phones to define the key vocabulary terms and express those terms in their own words in Fakebook.

Day 2

The Lesson Structure: Activities Review the previous days key terms and lesson and then explain to students that unit rate is used to find distance travel by calculating average rate of speed. I will tell the student that if you know the distance traveled and the travel time for a moving object, you can find the average rate, or average speed. I will then model how to solve/calculate to find the average speed. Then, working in groups, have the students go outside and each student will run 50 meters, while the group uses the stopwatch app to measure the time. After each student has ran, the class will return and calculate the average distance ran per second. The students will then go onto FakeBook and discuss the results.

As the students calculate the distance ran per second the teacher will monitor for student understanding.

Day 3

Closing/Assessment Have the students work with a partner then work with a partner. Then, have the students go online to research the growth per year rate of types of plants. Have the students find images and film that illustrate the growth rate of the plants they researched. Then, the students will create an IMovie presentation in which they categorize the 3 types of plants they researched and demonstrate how to calculated the unit rate of growth per month for each plant. The group will present their findings and presentation to the class. The teacher will circulate throughout the assessment period to assess student understanding and assist with any technical issues.
