Prior Knowledge: Based on the ELA CCSS RI.K., RI.1., and RI.2., students should know what the main topic of a text is and should be able to find key details to support it independently. They should be able to find an overall main idea for a multiparagraph text along with main ideas for each paragraph. Activity 1. Focus and Review 2. Statement of Objective for Student Description of Activities and Setting When you read a story, do you try to figure out what the main idea is? Do you sometimes understand the main idea and have to find details to make sure it is right? Today we are going to review how to find the main idea in the text and the details that support our main idea. By finding and supporting the main idea in the text, we can understand what we are reading better. The main idea gives us the overall idea of the text. We need to use the text as evidence to support what we think is the main idea. While I am reading I might stop to ask myself What did I just read about? What do these details have in common? Where in the text can I find details that support this main idea? Good readers stop to piece together the key details that they believe makes the main idea. We need to make sure the details arent just random pieces from the text. We can find the main idea for separate paragraphs or for the overall paragraph. Teacher will introduce the book Barbara Park. Teacher will stop at end of the first section and do a think aloud. Well I know the main idea is what the text was all about and the section I just read focused on Barbara Parks. I know I read about how she liked to be funny. I also read about how she has sold a lot of books in different languages. I remember that it said Barbara Parks liked to 5 Minutes talk as a child too. Hmmm I think they only mentioned Barbara Parks talking once so that cant be the main idea. The other two were talked about throughout the section of text so the main idea must be that Barbara Parks wrote funny and popular books like Junie B. Jones. Well now that I think I have my main idea, I need to make sure it has support from the text. Well the heading says One Funny Writer so that supports the part of my main idea that says Barbara Parks wrote funny books. I also read that she makes kids and parents laugh with her books so that supports that she is funny too. Lastly I see where the book has sold about 25 million copies in only North America. It must be popular if it has sold that many copies. This supports the part of the main idea that deals with Barbara Park being very popular. So now that I know the main idea and the supporting details, I can understand the information better. Time 2 Minutes

The teacher will continue to read the next chapter in Barbara Park but will stop after reading the section called Two Years to Write. Teacher will ask students what they think the main idea is and they will share their ideas to the 5 Minutes class. Teacher will then ask what details they read that support the main idea. Students will share their ideas with their partner. The teacher will then call on students to determine the key details. Students are to do their independent reading. Each student will be given a sticky note. During their individual reading, students are to do the boxes and 10 Minutes bullets format on their sticky note. They must write what they believe the main idea is along with at least two supporting details. Students must be able to have four out of the six points from the rubric for mastery.

Students will regroup to their tables. Once at their tables, they will share what main idea they found and the two details they found to support it. The teacher will wrap up by asking What is the main idea again?

Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations: In guided practice, the teacher will observe the students to see who is struggling so that they can help guide the conversation. Teacher will monitor independent practice to see who needs help with drawing the main idea. The teacher can then help guide the struggling students towards locating the main idea if necessary.
