Writing from Sources

As stated on definingthecore.com The Common Core State Standards require students not only to show that they can analyze and synthesize sources but also to present careful analysis, well-defended claims, and clear information through their writing. This will require students to draw evidence from a text or texts to support analysis, reflection, or research.

Student Tasks Write from sources using text based evidence

Teacher Tasks Model the process and procedures needed in order to lay a proper foundation for research methods, citation practices, and writing expectations.

Leadership Role Provide support and guidance in the implementation process of all Core shifts.

Research own theories and Present opportunities for topics students to write from multiple sources about a single topic (analysis and synthesis) Begin to generate their own informational and/or argumentative texts by providing evidence from scholarly journals and other valid resources to support their claim and/or topic. Encourage students in creating dialogue around their ideas, research, and evidence.
