Journal of the Clinical Experience!

! This clinical experience took place at Lockwood Elementary School, of which I became the interim principal of just a couple of months prior to this clinical. The Superintendent, Dr. Bill DeFrance, served as my mentor. Looking back he and I met several times, but for the most part those interactions were in meetings or were part of my principal duties and not specic to this clinical experience.! January 13,2014! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! January 14, 2014! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! January 21, 2014! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Bill and I met to discuss the clinical plan. He pointed out some ! issues specic to the building that he would like me to focus on ! including the new Title I money and the issues with the Montessori ! alignment and we created a plan around them.! Took part in a meeting with all of the Administrators from the !! district. The main topic of discussion was the schedule and how to ! handle the snow days. We also discussed social media and how it ! could be best utilized, and the dangers of it. It was also decided ! what administrators would serve on what committee.! Bill came over for about and hour to check-in and see how things ! were doing. We walked around and visited classrooms, discussed ! how things were going in the building, and he asked what I thought ! about the ofce staff (which I told him that the two do a nice job and are very supportive). We also discussed the possibility of looping ! with some of our traditional 1st and 2nd grade classrooms next ! year.! Took part in an Administrators Meeting. The main topic was !! changing the calendar, specically extending the 2nd Trimester at ! the High School due to all of the snow days. We also discussed the shortfall in the current budget and the projections for next year ! along with staff changes.!

February 11, 2014! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

February 24, 2014! I had two meetings with Bill this day. The rst was during the day ! ! ! ! with other administrators and ofce staff to discuss the new district ! ! ! ! radios including their features and the expectations for use. After ! ! ! ! school the Montessori teachers and I met with Bill and the ! ! ! ! ! curriculum director to present our proposed alignment for next year ! ! ! ! (which is also one of the competencies). We explained what we ! ! ! ! wanted to do and why. Bill approved the plan, explained we would ! ! ! ! need to present it to the Curriculum Committee, and offered ! ! ! ! ! suggestions on how to do that.!

Bill and I, along with another teacher, met with R&D Landscaping to go over plans for a Natural Playground. We shared what we were looking for with the designer, discussed the budget, and the cost of ! maintaining it. In addition Bill explained the biding process.! Bill stopped by for a minute to inform me that the Board removed ! the interim tag and I was ofcially now the principal. ! Met with the Curriculum Committee, including Bill, to present the ! Montessori realignment plan. Bill helped answer questions from ! the committee and it was approved from a curriculum aspect. The ! committee wanted it to be presented to the Board because of the ! nancial piece.! Met with Bill to discuss my evaluation. He was pleased with my ! performance and very positive overall and asked me to think areas ! I would like to grow and possibly move into at a later time. He ! mentioned moving to other buildings along with working with ! technology or nances at the Central Ofce level. To be honest I ! was so focused on what needed to be done at Lockwood for the ! end of this year and going into next year that I really did not give it ! much thought. We set up a meeting to discuss stafng and ! ! alignment of the Montessori program for next year for the following ! day.! We met to discuss stafng for next year. We looked at the student ! numbers and decided it would be necessary to add a section to the ! 1st grade and lose a section at the 2nd grade. We also discussed ! creating a looping class. Bill also gave me guidance on preparing ! the presentation to the School Board about the Montessori ! ! realignment plan.! Talked with Bill prior to the Board Meeting about the upcoming ! presentation during which he offered some last minute advice and ! lled me in on what to expect. I then Presented the Montessori ! plan to the Board of Education. Again Bill helped answer questions and recommended putting off the nancial piece until we knew ! more about the budget. The Board approved the realignment.
