March 25, 2014 Dear Scholarship Award Committee,

Alhambra

I am pleased to recommend Alexa Tagaban as a candidate for scholarship through your

Bioscience

program. She is a bright, good-natured, and creative young woman. Ive had the pleasure of knowing Alexa for 4 years and have been her instructor 3 of those. She was in my Freshman English class, my Bioethics course as a junior, and in my Humanities course her senior year. I am also the coordinator for our Internship Program, in which she participates. In that time, I have had the opportunity to watch her develop as a student and as a young person. She has grown a great deal in her ability to see things from multiple perspectives and to challenge her classmates to do the same. She is a hard worker, who demonstrates a desire and commitment to continual improvement.

take responsibility and ownership of her learning journey. Alexa is inquisitive, dedicated to quality workmanship, and makes every effort to take advantage of her opportunities, in order to further herself and move forward towards her goals. She is self-motivated and fully understands the benefits and consequences of the choices she makes. Not only has Alexa been involved in school-related clubs and events like Student Government, National Honor Society, STARS Club (Science, Technology and Research Society), and UNICEF, but she has also participated in a number of endeavors outside of school: CompuGirls, National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at UCLA, ASU StartTalk Chinese Language Camp, and National Student Leadership Conference on Medicine and Healthcare at UC Berkeley. These experiences have helped Alexa develop a broader perspective and helped her develop leadership skills and an awareness of issues across the globe. In addition to these many club, camp and conference opportunities, Alexa has also expanded her interpersonal and lab research skills through long term engagements such as her internships at Arizona Science Center and the SCENE (Southwest Center of Education and the Natural Environment) Program at ASU, and her volunteer work at John C. Lincoln Hospital. Alexas participation in so many different programs is testament to the quality of her character, her hard work, and her dedication to her goals for the future.

Over the course of Alexas journey, she has found many ways to positively contribute to her classes. She participates in small group discussions in a meaningful way, sharing her

understandings of the concepts, gleaned through the reading and writing shes done in preparation. She shares her work without hesitation, both to get feedback from her classmates and to help provide her own insight and interpretation of the task. Classmates respect Alexa and seek her feedback on their work, as well. And she is comfortable asking questions if shes struggling with a concept or an assignment. Additionally, Alexa is always eager to learn more, always ready to help, and always prepared to engage in selfreflection. These qualities speak to both her positive, constructive attitude and her desire to move closer to the goals she has set for herself.
