RELG 337 Themes in Buddhist Studies June 9 July 10, 2014 MTWR 11:05-1:25 PM Instructor: Julia Stenzel
Compassion in Buddhist context is not just a sentiment in the face of suffering, but a state of mind based on the complete reversal of selfish tendencies. The purpose of this course is to examine the textual foundations of the philosophy and practice of compassion in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism. On the basis of these, we will explore how Buddhists of the 20th century apply the teachings of compassion in contemporary contexts. Topics include the role of compassion in bereavement care and conflict resolution, selfcompassion, and secular compassion training as the object of neuroscientific research.
