Second Grade #3 Objectives: Students will be able to sing with others while performing simple rhythmic patterns on classroom

instruments with accuracy. Students will be able to respond through purposeful movement to specific music events while listening to music. Materials: Yellow classroom books, ipod, drums, wood blocks, tambourines, triangles 1. Review Shoo Fly with dance (movement) a. Sing first in a big circle b. Then sing while doing the dance i. Walk R, L, R, L on shoo fly ii. Walk in, out, in, out of the circle on I feel, I feel iii. Raise arms for OH! 2. Introduce John Kanaka a. Ask students to sit in the front of the room b. Teacher will sing John Kanaka once. Then without talking, sing again. c. Teach John Kanakanaka tu lei ey part by echo singing. d. Then the teacher will sing the song and students join in on John kanakanaka e. Then echo sing the remaining parts of the song and put it together. 3. p. 251 Carnivalito (listening and movement) a. Listen to an excerpt of the first section b. Ask students to stand and repeat after me. Stomp the opening rhythm of Carnivalito. (ta rest ta rest ta ta ta rest) c. We are going to listen to a piece of music that uses this rhythm. Find your own special standing place in the room. Play the recording and walk around the room to the rhythm of Carnivalito. d. Pause the recording before the second part and ask students to return to the front of the room. Listen to an excerpt of the second part. Demonstrate the skip with swinging arms motion. Then continue the recording. e. Allow it to continue to play without stopping and visually assess the students who are able to successfully change motions for the different sections. 4. John Kanaka with motions a. Return to the front of the room. All sing John Kanaka once or twice to review. b. Add in motions one at a time on each of the words. Ask students to sing, watch, and join in when they figure out the new motion. Sing the song four times back to back, adding a new motion each time. i. John: stomp (drum) ii. Kanakanaka: claps (wood blocks) iii. Tu lei: Cross arms across chest and pat twice (tambourine) iv. Ay: snap (triangle) 5. Review Respect Song (Mondays class will need to learn the last part) a. Bring yellow books to the front of the room. Stand and sing what we know so far (A & B) b. Sit and listen to part C

c. Echo speak part C with teacher d. Then sing with recording e. Put books on seats 6. John Kanaka with instruments a. Divide the class into four groups. Assign instruments to each group and ask them to retrieve them from the closet. b. Return to the front of the room with instruments. Sing the song adding in one of the instruments on each repetition. Teacher will demonstrate by playing each instrument and allow them to take over during the rest of the song. c. Play a fifth time with everyone playing and singing. 7. If time permits, sing Respect Song again, then put away books
