Problems

1. A 230 kV transmission line delivers power to an inductive load having a power

factor of 0.9. The impedance of the transmission line is 0.05 + j 0.5 pu on 100 MVA
base. The sending end of the line is held at 1.02 pu. Determine the power delivered
to the load and the voltage at the receiving end if the load impedance is 1.5 pu.
(Vr=0.84 pu, Pr=0.43 pu)

2. Repeat the above with the sending end voltage of 1.0 pu (Vr=0.82 pu, Pr=0.41 pu)

3. Draw a block diagram of an excitation system and explain the function of each block.

4. State the difference between dc, ac and static excitation systems and comment on
their speed of response.

5. A 200 MVA, 22 kV, 60 Hz, synchronous generator supplies power to an infinite bus
through a transformer and a transmission line. The reactances of the generator,
transformer and the transmission line are 0.8 pu, 0.01 pu , and 0.19 pu respectively
(expressed on the MVA base of the generator). The active power delivered to the
infinite bus is 0.85 pu. Determine the reactive power supplied by the generator
when the excitation voltage is 1.5 pu. Show that the transmission line supplies
reactive power to the infinite bus. (1.014 pu, line supplies 0.24 pu reactive power to
the infinite bus).

6. Repeat problem (5) above with excitation voltage of 1.6 pu. (1.2pu, 0.35pu).

7. Draw phasor diagrams showing the infinite bus voltage, line current, and excitation
voltage for above (5) and (6).
