"Opinion: Why Social Media Is Destroying Our Social Skills | USA TODAY TODAY College." Opinion: Why Social Media Is Destroying Our Social Skills | USA TODAY College. USA Today, 11 Oct. 2012. Web. 03 Feb. 2014. This article has many helpful facts and statistics about the negatives of social media on social skills. Jasmine Fowlkes starts by saying that social media sites are the most prevalent and preferred forms of communication among the current generation. She goes on to say that even with close friends and family young people are more likely to communicate through social media and electronic devices. Fowlkes then talks about social media versus interpersonal communication. She brings up a very interesting casino study that I used as an example in the inquiry proposal. The study found that, People increasingly prefer quick and frequent engagement with instant updates on news than a prolonged chat and are also finding new ways to catch up with friends from the comfort of their sofa. Also the study found that, even when there is an opportunity to see people face-to-face, on weekends for example, up to 11% of adults still prefer to stay at home and communicate on their devices instead. These are very interesting facts that I intend to use in my final paper. Fowlkes ends with saying

that social media should be used in moderation especially when around other people face to face. Also that you will gain more from a face to face personal

Antis, Tom. "Parent Today: Is Social Media Ruining Our Kids' Social Skills?" Parent Today: Is Social Media Ruining Our Kids' Social Skills? Capital Region BOCES, 9 May 2013. Web. 04 Feb. 2014.

This article was written and published in 2013 so it is fairly recent information. Tom Antis talks about how pre-teens are using Facebook too young and how this lessens their face to face contact with one another. Antis says that he has always encouraged his children to be friendly and make new friends. This has become too easy and social media defeats the purpose of what he meant. He wanted his children to go outside and play with new kids and makes different friends, not sit behind a computer and chat. Near the end of the article Antis lists six different tip/helpful hints about online privileges and things to watch out for with children being on social networking. I plan on using this article as parental perspective and how parents have a reason to be worried about their childs online activity. I believe that this article will be very helpful to my final paper.

Rankin, Sherry L. "The Impact of Text Messaging Language Shortcuts on Developmental Students' FormalWriting Skills." Udini.proquest.com. Udini, n.d. Web. 15 Feb. 2014. <http://udini.proquest.com/view/the-impact-of-text-messaging-goid:807418333/>.

This is a dissertations written by Sherry Rankin. The dissertation has four main research questions which will be very helpful to me while writing my final paper. The four research questions are (1) how students use language shortcuts in their academic writing, (2) how language shortcuts influence students' spelling and grammar skills, (3) how well students are able to differentiate between casual writing and academic writing, and (4) how the use of language shortcuts influences the amount of writing students do. Rankin starts off by introducing the case study which consists of 25 students including student interviews observation of a writing assignment and a graded composition. She then talks about the nature of the study and hos its just a single case study on the examination of the impact of texting on development of a student writing skills. She brings us population and sampling next where she talks about the participants of the program. In section two she begins to talk about how writing teachers have encountered new challenges because of the overuse of textspeak. The full dissertation is 90 pages and its cuts off after the beginning of section two because you have to purchase the rest, but the information given is still relevant and helpful to my paper.

Martin, Alice. "The 4 Negative Side Effects Of Technology." Edudemic - Connecting Education and Technology. Edudemic, 30 May 2013. Web. 15 Feb. 2014. <http://www.edudemic.com/the-4-negative-side-effects-of-technology/>.

This article was written in 2013 so it is relevant with relatively current information. This article is short, sweet and informative. Martin states that the rapid revolution of technology has drastically affected our lives so much and we believe that it

is completely beneficial without and downfalls. Martin also states that these gadgets and technology can really damage childrens development and communication. Martin then goes on to list the four negative side effects of technology and explains them in depth. These are mostly the thing I will be incorporating into my final paper.

Koikai, Elizabeth. "The Negative Impact of Social Media on Our Lives." The Moose. N.p., 8 May 2013. Web. 14 Feb. 2014. <http://themoose.no/2013/05/08/the-negative-impact-of social-media-on-our-lives/>. This article is current because it was written in 2013 and has relevant information. Elizabeth Koikai starts off by saying that while all aspects of social media are not negative, the aspects that she will discuss are negative. Koikai discusses six negative aspects of social media and they are, (1) Addiction to social media, (2) Constant comparison with others, (3) Personal vs. Professional Presentation, (4) Making Friends online, (5) Distraction, (6) Cyberbullying/ Hate Speech. Her section Constant comparison to others is something in intend to focus on in my paper because its very true and not often brought up on other websites. It is currently extremely relevant because I know I do it myself and its the reason many young people have a low self-esteem. Society already has killed young girls self-esteem by showing unrealistic women in media and now social media is contributing to this unrealism as well. I will also focus on cyberbullying and hate speech as well because it affects a large number of young children and can lead to depression, low self-esteem and possibly even suicide. I enjoyed this article greatly and I believe its because Elizabeth Koikai is young and can relate and compare to young people. I will use much of this article information in my final paper.
