*The Human Services Internship (Chapter 1) Wilbert Roberson, Jr.

Wilmington University The Human Services Internship: Getting the most from your experience. Getting Started My site location is the Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence (DCADV). Founded in 1994, the Delaware Coalition of Domestic Violence is Delawares federally recognized state domestic violence coalition. I will not physically be in place until Tuesday, January 21, 2014. I have had the opportunity to meet with my site supervisor, Mariann KenvilleMoore, LCSW, Director of Policy. My expectation of this internship is to have a clear understanding of my position and their expectations of me as an intern. I expect review the needs of the DCADV and how I will best serve to help DCADV meet those needs. I expect my site supervisor to describe the outcome that is expected, including the criteria that must be met, list the reason why, and discuss the roles, responsibilities and authority of everyone within the DCADV. During my initial visit I determined that my site supervisor would be helpful, understanding, and willing to share her knowledge. I have a clear understanding of my position and my site supervisor expectations of me as an intern. Most importantly, establishing and discussing goals and opportunities and establishing our learning contract. Establishing the learning contract will allow me to document how, when, how often, with whom, etc., the learning goals will be accomplished. The learning contract, as discussed in class, is a tool to formalize my responsibilities, goals and objectives, and how the objectives will be met and assessed. Finally, to strategize how the DCADV staff members expectations will mesh with my role as a Wilmington University (WilmU) intern. How my position will rely on the work of another, ensure that my duties and schedules align and that I can coordinate to assist and learn from all qualified DCADV staff members to meet the needs of DCADV while meeting the requirements of WilmU. The following is a list of additional expectations: Quality supervision Useful and timely feedback Workplace dignity and respect Professionalism and punctuality Teamwork and a positive work environment

My goal is to make this the very best learning experience possible and to proudly represent Wilmington University. With my course work I hope to gain firsthand knowledge of the human services filed. I will enjoy taking what I learn from this class and being able to use it in my job and other graduate classes as well as my site location. At the present time, my technology knowledge is minimal (e-portfolio), but sure to grow by leaps and bounds upon completion. As my knowledge of this process grows, my nervousness and anxiety will decrease. My expectation from this class is to be able to gain new knowledge about the human services field and learn to apply that knowledge as a human services specialist. I am excited about creating my e-portfolio and hope I can retain everything I learn in class.
