Walking With Adverbs Date: April 8, 2014

Class: KIN 355 Equipment Used: N/A st Grade Level: 1 Grade Time: 9:10 Targeted NASPE Standard(s): 1, 2, 3, 4

Specific Objective: Students will be able to define a verb as an action and define an adverb as a word that describes a verb and usually ends in ly. They will then be able to accurately perform these 15 verbs (in the activity section) according to the adverbs that modify the verbs. Concomitant Objective: Students will stay physically active while learning about what an adverb is and building their vocabulary of adverbs. Time Procedures Followed Materials Warm Up: Not needed because students will be 0 participating in low physical activity. The main focus is Minutes the science concepts. Transition: Students will start at their seats. We will 45 carefully move the desks out of the way, towards the Seconds sides of the room. Students will all move to the center of the room and sit down spread out.

Set Induction: Class is sitting down-Raise your hand if you like to be physically active. -Raise your hand and tell me why it is important to be active. -Raise your hand and tell me what a type of word is which is an action word? (Verb) -Explain learnable piece Learnable Piece: - Today, we are going to review our verbs while also learning about something called adverbs. Presentation of New Material/Directions: - So we said that a verb is an action word. - Raise your hand if you can tell me an example of a verb. - Adverbs describe verbs, or actions. - They usually end with an ly - A few examples of a verb would be quickly, quietly, and strongly. - So an example sentence would be, she quickly walked to class. - We are going to do an activity today, similar to Simon Says.

I will use an adverb in a sentence and if I use the adverb correctly then you will do the action. If I do not correctly use the adverb correctly then you will stay frozen. We are not going to get out if you accidentally move just so you can practice these adverbs.

Check for understanding: What is an adverb? What are you going to do if the adverb is used correctly? Not correctly? Safety: -Spread out to make sure that you dont run into others as you are doing the action. - If it is a running action, jog and dont run into each other

Transition: When I say go, everyone is going to stand up quietly and spread out. Activity: 1. Walk quietly (correct) 2. Walk slow (not correct) -What should it be? (walk slowly) 3. Skip energetically (correct) 4. Gallop joyfully (correct) 5. Run quick (not correct) - What should it be? (Run quickly) 6. Leap elegantly (correct) 7. Shuffle silently (correct) 8. Run slowly (correct) 9. Hop excitedly (correct) 10. Skip gracefully (correct) 11. Leap quiet (not correct) - What should it be? (Leap quietly) 12. Skip lazily (correct) 13. Walk briskly (correct) 14. Hop noisily (correct) 15. Shuffle smoothly (correct)
