Observation One Monday, January 27, 2014 Time: 11:00pm-11:20pm Description of the Location: The figured world I am going

to be observing is from the show on MTV, Awkward. The location in this episode is at first in their high school. This high school is like any other normal school, the scenes take place in the health office, the guidance counselors office, an English classroom, and outside. Later on in the episode there is a party at Mattys house. Outside is where most of the drinking and partying went on, out by the pool and the patio. Inside in the dining room was where Jake and Tamara sat to have a talk with Jenna. When the night ended Jenna slept in a window seal, while Jake, Tamara, and Ming all slept on the sofa in the living room. Mattys bedroom was down the hall where Hunter and he slept. Across from the dining room was the kitchen where the gang met up as they awakened and smelled the muffins that Jenna made for all of them. Another location is at Jennas house. Matty and her have a conversation on the couch in the living room. Also in Jennas house, Jennas friends try to get her to go to prom in her bedroom, and she also has a talk with her mom in her room. There is another location at the ABC store where Matty tries to buy alcohol for Jenna and Bailey, but then when they go up to the counter they see that Mrs. Marx is the cashier and Matty and Bailey take off running. Figured World: A figured world is a group of people in an environment that all behave, act, or have similar things in common. Summary: Awkward is a television show based in a high school and showcases the lives of a group of friends. The main character is Jenna Hamilton. After Jenna fell in the bathroom and broke some of her bones she had to wear this large cast on her arm and a neck brace, Jennas popularity shot through the roof. Some people made fun of her and thought she was trying to commit suicide, but everyone began to notice her, even her secret crush Matty. Matty has always been the popular, athletic hunk of the school. They begin dating and go through many experiences high schoolers deal with in relationships today. Other main characters include Jake and Tamara, Jennas best friend. Jake is Mattys best friend, Jennas ex-boyfriend and Tamaras current boyfriend.awkward. High school is filled with all kinds of rules. In this show Jenna seems to break quite a few. For example she skips school to have sex with Matty. She smokes weed on school grounds which gets her suspended. However, she has a very close relationship with her guidance counselor who gives Jenna extra special attention and advice, she acts more like a big sister. When her and Jenna get into an argument, Jenna writes an essay in her English class that exposes how close of a relationship that she has with her counselor that gets her suspended from her job. In this show high school is a place where some scenes are in class, but mainly its during lunch and then what they do after the school day is over. This show is based in a modern high school where students use modern forms of communication. Many conversations and arguments occur via texting and social networking sites. A big part of Jenna expressing herself is through her blog. She enjoys writing and she uses her blog as a way of communicating, not only with those who read it, but with herself. There are only a few discourse communities in Awkward. There is this group of Asians that are always together, they have a leader and they know everything about everything. The guidance counselor Ms. Marx, she goes and tells all of the office ladies and the other teachers the gossip that she hears is going around, but other than that it doesnt really show the teachers that often. Then there is the group of friends that Jenna hangs out with who is always together; Jenna, Tamara, Ming, Jake, and Matty.

Actors: -Jenna Hamilton: Jenna is a junior in high school who was nobody until she met the guy of her dreams, Matty. She and Matty were never official or seen in public together, but they had sex in different places. Jenna wanted to DTR (define the relationship), but he acted like he didnt want to be seen with her. Then Jenna starts dating Mattys best friend Jake. Jenna couldnt help but to still be crazy over Matty, so eventually her and Matty began dating. Before this episode Jenna met a guy named Collin, and she thought he was hot and she cheated on Matty with him, she felt bad and tried to break it off but couldnt help herself to keep going back. Jenna tried to be distant from Matty, and on her birthday Matty and her mom and friends wanted to throw a surprise birthday party for her. Jenna told Matty she wanted to do something another night so she could meet up with Collin, they stormed into her house making out when everyone yelled surprise and found out about their secret. This is when her life became ruined, just as her relationships with everyone went downhill, except with Collin. -Matty McKibbon: Matty is Jennas ex, but they are currently friends again, but he has a crush on Jennas new friend Bailey. Matty is also Jakes best friend. Matty is the typical hot jock that everyone loves. He is not like other jocks though, he is very sweet and sensitive. At the beginning when him and Jenna first started hooking up he was afraid to show his feelings to other people, he didnt want people to know what he was doing with her, or knowing that he was hanging out with her at all. But then time came around and they finally became a couple and they were so cute together, until Jenna ruined it by cheating on him with Collin. Matty showed he was the better person by not getting angry and hitting Collin, he was very upset and showed how sensitive he was. But now him and Jenna are good friends and everything is getting back to normal. -Tamara: Tamara is Jennas best friend and Jakes girlfriend. Tamara is one of the cheerleaders. She is a crazy drama queen that talks all the time. She is in control of her relationship with Jake. She likes to cut people off and finish their sentences, which makes Jake really mad, but she doesnt realize it until he has to put her in her place. She is overall a good girl, just a big chatterbox. -Jake Rosati: Jake is Jennas ex, Mattys best friend, and Tamaras current boyfriend. Jake always has Mattys back, and is also obsessed with his girlfriend. Jake is kind of like Tamaras little puppy dog, but as their relationship goes on, he stands up to her and tells her what he doesnt like about how she acts, like how she tries to control everything. Jake is overall a nice, chill guy that everyone seems to like. -Sadie Saxton: Sadie is a senior like Matty and Jake, she is a cheerleader and does not like Jenna or her two closest friends, Tamara or Ming. Jenna and her friends hate her, Sadie is such a shit talker. She was very rich until the market went down and now her family is broke, then her parents got a divorce. She is just mean to everyone, except Matty. She had a crush on Matty for the longest time, but I guess she gave that up, now her and Matty have a close relationship, they are good friends.

-Collin: Collin is who Jenna gets caught up with, he is bad for her and she doesnt realize it until it is almost too late. He ruins her relationship with her family, friends, and Matty. He is a bad guy, he drinks illegally and does drugs. He doesnt seem to care about anything when he is under the influence. After Jenna left him, he tried to apologize to her I guess for his guilty conscience, but that wasnt no good for Jenna. He is no good. -Lacey Hamilton: This is Jennas mom, she is always there for Jenna. Jenna and she have a very close relationship, they are like best friends. She also is the schools nurse for a little while. She is a bit ditzy, others look at her as a young, hot mom. She loves Jenna with Matty, and thinks they are the perfect couple. -Valerie Marks: Ms. Marks is the schools guidance counselor. Lacey and she became best friends during this season because Jenna comes to her about all of her problems. She doesnt necessarily give the best advice, but she is there for support and tries to stay in on all the latest gossip. Some of the names that she is called by are; Val, Valerie, and Ms. Marx. -Ming: Ming is the other best friend of Jenna and Tamara. She is Asian and is at one point in time the leader of the Mafia. She has a boyfriend named Fred. She is the goody goody girl out of the group. Artifacts: -Book: Jennas English teacher Mr. Hart gave Jenna a book called Unraveled that helped her find her voice, and find herself again. -Jennas computer: Jennas computer is an important artifact because it is where she sits down to do her blogs which means a lot to her and to do her homework for English. Discourse Communities: -The Mafia: The mafia is a group of Asians at Jennas school who know everything about everything. Becca was the leader of the mafia that no one liked, so they sent her away, so then Ming became the mafia leader. She abused her powers a lot and then people started to not like her. Some strange things started happening, and then Ming found out that Becca came back to town and is taking back over the mafia. The mafia is a powerful group of Asians, they can get you answers to tests, they know all of the gossip in school, they know who is hooking up with who, anything you want to know the mafia could tell you. -Cheerleaders: The cheerleaders are a popular group, and obviously the cheerleaders are supposed to all hang out, this isnt quite the case here. Tamara wanted so bad to be a cheerleader, she finally tried out and made the squad. Tamara isnt in the in-crowd with the other stuck up cheerleaders, like Sadie and her best friend Lissa. Sadie and Lissa are usually stuck up each others butts 99 percent of the time, and as everyone would agree with, they are total bitches.

Literacy Practices: -Jennas Blog: Jenna has a blog that she writes in all of the time. She writes down everything that happens in this anonymous blog, it has everything in it, from good to bad. -Text Messaging/Phone calls- This is the most used form of communication on through all of Jennas friends and everyone at school. Jenna, Tamara, and Ming often three-way and talk on the phone, they also do group texting to where they call all three type each other at the same time.

The Observation: 11:00PM- After everything that could possibly go wrong in Jennas life she found herself again and was trying to get rid of all the negative and on the road to recovery of becoming herself again with this episode being called Old Jenna. In a previous episode Jenna wrote a paper about her guidance counselor that she was relatively close with and got her suspended from her job. In this episode Jenna was missing her and snuck into her office when a knock on the door came, a new girl named Bailey. Jenna listened to Baileys problem about a rumor that had been going around about her, and Jenna gave her the best advice she could, just as Valerie would have if she were there. In the process of Jennas advice-giving, she made a new friend. 11:05PM- Jenna is making up with her friends, while sharing their stories Tamara tells Jenna that her and Jake broke up and it is going to be awkward seeing him tonight at Mattys party because he has been acting different towards her. Meanwhile, Jenna felt left out because she didnt even know about the St. Mattys Day Party. She also finds out that Devin and Matty broke up so maybe this will give her hope and the chance to have some alone time and rekindle their relationship at his party. Jennas mom becomes the schools new nurse and she has large breasts that are always out, so at school there is a long line of boys waiting at the Health office complaining of injuries that they dont even have to stare at her breasts. Valerie is caught driving on school property. During English class an old student named Hunter came back to visit her teacher, Mr. Hart, while she was home for spring break. He took off and gave her some money to stay there for the rest of the period with his class. Jenna talked to her and asked how she passed his class, she didnt, but in the process she found her voice after Mr. Hart gave her a book called Unraveled, the same book he gave Jenna. Then, Jenna talked to Matty and managed to make herself invited to his party. 11:10PM-Jenna drove Tamara and Ming to the party agreeing to be the designated driver and being on probation by her friends because how bad she treated them. Jenna invited her new friend Bailey. Jenna gets to talk to Matty and he tells her to come and find him later on to hang out. Sadie is frustrated with her new boy, because all he talks about is business with her and he doesnt know when to make the right move until she has to tell him at the party, and then they go at it. Sadie finally gets what she wants, and they start making out. Jenna runs into the older girl that came back to school, Hunter, at Mattys party. After Bailey left Jenna went to go find Matty to hang out like he said, but when she found them she saw Matty and Hunter making out. 11:15-After seeing Matty with his ex that took his v-card, Jenna got overwhelmed and that resulted to her pouring herself a drink from the keg. Jenna gets drunk and starts to talk to Jake and she kissed him. Tamara walks in and sees them kissing, then the give Jenna a water and sit down and have a talk with her about how they are concerned about her, then Jake and Tamara start arguing and then they make up and get back together and Jenna leaves the table and starts drinking again. They had to end up staying at Mattys since they were all drinking. Jenna woke up early and felt bad about what she did to them, so she cleaned up the whole house, including the outside where all the solo cups and stuff was. Jenna also cooked breakfast for Tamara, Jake, Ming, Matty, and Hunter. She thought Hunter was still there and that her and Matty did something, but when Jake mentioned it Matty said she threw up last night and he took care of her and she must have took off this morning, plus he wanted to hang out with someone else. That

comment meant Jenna which made her really excited. She apologized for being such a bad friend to all of them and they all became cool again.

Observation 2 9:00-9:30 pm 9:00 Jenna is hanging out with Matty and Bailey, they are in Mattys truck at the ABC store. Bailey and Jenna are quizzing Matty on his fake id so he can go in and by alcohol for them, but when they get to the register to pay it turns out that Ms. Marx is the cashier. Bailey and Matty run out of the store and Jenna stays to talk to Val. Val yells at Jenna and tells her to go F*** herself. Jenna then realizes that she was the reason Val got fired and that she needed to do something about it. 9:03 Prom tickets are now available for purchase and now that Jenna and Matty are becoming close again Jenna starts getting her hopes up. Ming realizes that the Asian mafia is no longer working with her. Matty, Jake, Tamara, Jenna, and Ming are sitting outside at a table and Matty brings up prom and asks if that was lie DTRing (defining the relationship). Everyone said yes, and then Jenna gets excited and thinks that maybe Matty is going to ask her and this will be the beginning to restart their old relationship. 9:08 Tamara freaks out and wants to skip fifth period to go prom dress shopping before everybody gets all the good dresses. Jenna starts to dress stress too, thinking she has to find a good dress if Matty is going to ask her to prom. Jenna then runs into the principal and begs him to get Vals job back and then he tells her that she already has a hearing. Then Jenna calls Val and leaves her a voicemail that she has a hearing to get her job back. 9:11 Jennas mom is no longer needed as the school nurse. When Jenna gets home from school she finds her mom sulking because she wants to feel needed. Jenna suggested to go shopping but her dad cut up her moms credit cards because she spends too much on therapyretail therapy. Tamara, Jenna, Ming and Bailey all go prom dress shopping. Ming gets shoved into a dark dressing room and is told by this mysterious Asian guy that she has a meeting at school in the dark of night about her departure from her position in the mafia. 9:17 While dress shopping Jenna finds a dress that she really likes, but she doesnt buy it. Bailey asks Jenna if she could comment on her status and says that Matty and she have been spending a lot of time together lately and suggests that Jenna and he go to prom together. Val calls Jenna back and tells her she doesnt want her job back and to leave her alone. Jenna goes home and begs her mom to go to Vals house and talk her into going to her hearing to get her job back. They talk everything over and talk Val into going to the hearing. 9:22 Ming goes to the school for her meeting and it turns out that Becca was back (the old mafia leader that everyone hated). She made a trade and Becca had to agree to no longer try to destroy her life. 9:25 Valerie gets her job back and everything goes back to normal. Jenna goes and buys the dress that she really wanted and then tries it when she gets back home. Matty texted Jenna and asked if he could come over later to ask her something and of course Jenna gets excited because she thinks Matty is going to pop the question and ask her to prom. Jennas mom and her were looking at how pretty she looked in the dress when the doorbell rang. Jennas dad hollered in that it was Matty, they quickly panicked and couldnt get the dress off because the zipper was stuck. She had to throw on a jacket and lie to him and say that she was going to a bar mitzvah. Then they sit down to talk.

Observation 3 11-11:30pm 11:00 Matty wanted to make sure it was okay if he asked to take Bailey to prom. Jenna said it was okay but she knew she had messed up the best relationship she had ever had. Jennas mom was waiting in her room waiting to hear how Matty asked her to prom, and she had to break the news to her. Jenna asked to be alone and then she got angry and cut the dress off of her and threw it down in the floor. She began to feel unraveled and then picked up the book she had been reading and started flipping through the pages. She then began to be into the book again and use it as a security blanket so she could avoid conversations. She then thought she was in love with the author of the book because he was saying everything she was going through. She then found out that the author of the book was her English teacher, he just changed his name. 11:05 In English class Mr. Hart gave them their last assignment and it was to reflect on this past year and write about who they want to be. Jenna is upset because she doesnt know who she wants to be and confronts the teacher and tells him she knows who he is. She talks to Val and finds out everyone knows that Matty dissed Jenna and asked Bailey to prom. Everyone is talking about it and Jenna feels like shit. 11:11 Ming is stressing out about prom because she thinks at the end of the night it is a ticket to sex and she isnt ready and doesnt want to have sex yet. They told her to just use one of the excuses and say she is on her period. Then Jake shows up at the table with Ming, Tamara, and Jenna and tries to get Jenna to come to prom with them even though she doesnt have a date. Ming is trying to avoid her boyfriend because she is still worrying about the sex thing. Sadie thinks she is in love with Austin, and starts having a soft-side moment (she isnt usually like this). This is unusual for Sadie because she is like a cold-hearted witch, and doesnt usually tell people about her mushy feelings about a guy that she likes. 11:15 Jenna found out that Matty and Bailey were no longer going together. Tamara encouraged her to ask Matty because she thought he really wanted to go with her, which wasnt the case. Jenna tells Matty she needs a date for prom and asks him if he has any ideas, he says no but will think of someone for her. He then tells her he isnt going because Bailey said no and there was no one else he would rather go with. Jenna starts to write on her blog about how she has no date or anything and how she is procrastinating on her paper. She wants to know why Bailey said no to Matty but she doesnt know how to talk to her. Ming still avoids Fred about prom. 11:18 Jenna finds Bailey and they talk. It was totally a miscommunication between them. Bailey said no to Matty and thought she gave him the wrong signs that she liked him. She does like him but didnt want to jeopardize her friendship with Jenna because Jenna is her only friend. Bailey turned him down to not hurt Jenna. Jenna and Bailey hug and then they see Matty. Jenna pulls him over to explain everything and then tells them that they can go to prom together. Bailey didnt know that Matty asked Jenna if it was okay before he asked her. Jenna finally got them to go together. Sadie then comes up to Jenna talking about how pathetic she was. Jenna didnt write her paper for English, but scribbled something down in the last minute. Then she crumbles the paper up and tells Mr. Hart it was a waste of his time and tries to make him give her a zero, but he wouldnt take it. He tells her the story about his struggle when he wrote his book and changed his name after he went through so much. He gives her the weekend to write the paper. She then realized she didnt have love for Mr. Hart, it was respect. 11:23 Matty talks about how he likes Bailey a lot and is the only girl that makes him not miss Jenna. Then Matty realizes he forgot to find Jenna a date but Jake tells him that it was a ploy to get Matty to ask him, but he didnt. Tamara and Ming go to Jennas house and give her a prom

ticket and try to get her to still go with them. She cant wear w ripped up dress, and she made up another excuse of having to write a paper. Ming and Fred had dinner with Mings parents and she was still flipping out about the sex thing and so she tried to embarrass Fred and tell her parents bad things about him so that they would give her a curfew, but they did just the opposite and told her to come home whenever. Jennas mom comes in to the rescue and got one of her friends to sew her dress back up and you can never tell it was cut up. 11:27 Jenna writes her paper and then gets ready and goes to prom after a long talk with her mom. Jenna took Mr. Harts advice and isnt going to run from her critics. Sadie and Austin tell each other they love each other. Ming told Fred that she was freaked out and didnt want to have sex, and Fred calmed her down and said he was just going to order pay per view and hopefully make out a little and then she felt a lot better. Jenna went to prom by herself, then she ran into Bailey and Matty. Bailey told them to go dance for a song. They talked and Matty said he didnt realize that the door was still open for them and Jenna said she didnt realize it was closed. After the song was over they walked back over to the table with their friends and let Bailey and Mattie go dance again. Jenna realizes she doesnt need a man to be happy and then goes into the crowd and dances by herself. Interview Questions 1. Question: If there was anything you could go back and do differently would you? If so, what would it be? Answer: I never would have become so close to Collin, if I knew who he really was I would have never have gotten myself into this mess. I never understood how much Mattie and I cared about each other and I ruined my relationships with my friends, family, and Mattie all for nothing. I lost control of myself and became someone Im not. 2. Question: Jenna, what made you want to go to prom even though you were by yourself? Answer: I have found myself and I have realized I dont need a guy in my life to be happy. I am just glad that things are pretty much back to the way they used to be. 3. Question: What was your initial reaction when Mattie asked you how you would feel if he asked Bailey to prom? Answer: I felt disappointed, not in him, but in myself. I knew that he deserved someone better than myself and Bailey is a good girl. I was secretly hoping for him to ask me, but now I realize that I was dumb to think that. I am just glad that we can be close friends again. 4. Question: Sadie, describe your relationship with Jenna. Answer: She is a total loser, nobody likes her, not even her friends. We dont really talk unless she wants some of my great advice, everyone always wants my advice. Youre welcome. 5. Question: Tamara, when did you realize Jenna was starting to veer off to the wrong path? Answer: I knew Collin was up to no good, I started seeing it early on when she wanted me to keep the secret of her and Collins side relationship.
