Goal Reflection: I chose time management improvement as one of my goals because I feel that this is one aspect of teaching that I need to improve on. Sometimes during class I find that we can easily get off topic, and it is hard to steer the students back to the subject. I also chose this goal because I feel that I am always looking at the clock to make sure I stay on time. One thing that I am always working on that will help me with time management is staying organized. I think that I have improved from past semesters but I also think that I have a long way to go.

Becoming comfortable with time management is hopefully something that comes easier as you continue to teach. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers who have developed techniques over their careers is a very valuable exercise. My mentor Mrs. Taylor, has been an elementary teacher for several years, and has already given me the opportunity to see excellent time management skills. I have also found that reading articles on the subject of time management can be beneficial, and introduce new ideas.

Goal Reflection: I chose increasing student participation as my goal because it is important that all students are engaged in lessons. I feel that my encouragement is effective in most cases, but participation is such a key factor in success for students and teachers that there is always room for improvement.

During my internship I have seen several different ways to keep students engaged. I have seen different techniques including Kagan activities. Good examples of Kagan activities are games where the students work with a partner or a small group. I have seen not just during my final internship, but throughout my entire field experience that students love to work with other students, and in doing so become much more engaged. Along with games comes competition, I know that this does not work with all students and that some students try not to be competitive, but based on what I have seen in my internship the students can be competitive while still having good sportsmanship and encouraging the other students to do their best. I have also seen during this semester the importance of seating assignments in the classroom. I have seen that trying to keep the less engaged students towards the front of the class causes them to be more involved with the lesson. Seating students away from talkative friends is also very effective.

Goal Reflection: I chose increasing my use of assessments techniques as part of my professional development plan because this was one aspect of my evaluation that I needed to work on. I believe that the Impact on Student learning project helped

me see the importance of pre-testing and post-testing. I feel that I have only touched on some of the formal assessments and have forgotten to do some of the informal assessments at times. Accurate recording of tests results and effective analysis though charts and graphs can be beneficial for teachers and help to identify both students and concepts that need further attention. The informal assessment techniques when used at the proper time can give an instant reading of what students are understanding as you are actually teaching the material. This instant feedback can allow you to address issues as they occur. In the future, I will try to use more informal assessments (i.e. thumbs up thumbs down, exit slips, and name two things that you have learned) to help gauge how my lesson is being received by the students.
