Teacher demonstrated enthusiasm and interest while teaching.! Sami was enthusiastic in her teaching and interaction with students.! ! Students were provided with necessary materials.! Students were provided with necessary materials (article, scissors, Scholastic news) when appropriate.! ! Lesson was presented in a clear and logical manner.! Sami presented the lesson in a before-during-after format.! ! Students were engaged throughout and were aware of what to do and what was expected of them.! Students (6) were engaged in the lesson and participated enthusiastically.! ! Sami opened the lesson by reminding students that last week they discussed ction and non ction. She had them clap once or twice to tell the difference. Sami then asked students to share the elements of each as she added them to a Tchart (ction and non ction). Students shared excellent answers (to entertain, real facts) then she introduced the book The Night Before St. Patricks Day and asked students if they thought it was ction or non ction and why. She asked them to listen as she read to determine if the book is ction or non ction. After reading, Sami asked students if the book was ction or nonction and why. Students gave appropriate answers. Sami then shared a nonction article about St. Patricks Day and read it aloud while students followed along. Before reading, she pointed out the atlas on the article and asked if students had predictions. After reading, she asked if they learned facts or ction. After students responded, Sami added the "did you know" article to the anchor chart under nonction and The Night Before St. Patricks Day under ction. She then asked students to take scissors and explained that students would cut out book covers from the Scholastic News and then decide if they are ction or nonction. Students had different versions of the Scholastic News based on level - this shows evidence of preparation and planning. As students worked, she reminded them to choose four or ve and think about ction vs. nonction. After an appropriate time, she had students add the covers to the chart under the appropriate column (ction or nonction). As they sorted books, Sami asked thoughtful questions about why the books went into that category. She closed the lesson by using the iPad app Quizlet to review the characteristics of ction and non ction. She modeled the rst one (photograph) and then helped each student think through his/her answer with questions (where would you nd a table of contents?) or prompts. This was a good way to integrate technology to make connections between instruction and assessment.! Sami set a goal to improve classroom management in future lessons.! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
