HOW I LEARNED TO READ AND WRITE

ALIYAH DAYS ENC 1102 PROFESSOR WOLCOTT

INTRODUCTION
Learning to read and write has an effect on a person later in life. I had many different materials provided to me, as a child, to help me learn to read and write.
Ex: computers, electronics, books

SPONSORS
My grandma has always been my main sponsor. Since she was a kindergarten teacher, she was always doing something, or teaching me something new. She was an inspiration to me. As a child, Aliyah would always come to me for help with all types of homework. She came to me before she would even think about going to her parents and when she wasnt working on school work, she was reading a book, or solving a puzzle. She was a bright child since she began school, said my grandma (A.Days).

SPONSORS (CONT.)
I would also consider my parents to be my sponsors. They made all the decisions which aided in me learning literacy. My parents bought me everything I possibly needed to learn literacy. Due to me excelling so quickly, I skipped kindergarten. I was considered too advanced and kindergarten was a waste of time (L. Days).

HOW MATERIALS IMPACTED ME

I have always enjoyed planning and writing things out from when I was in elementary school until the present day. The different electronics and computers I received were used solely for educational purposes.
Each allowed me to further enhance my education at a quicker level.

I loved to read everything from books to directions/ guides

CONFLICTS
Wanting to read everything wasnt always a good thing as I was growing up. I ran out of materials to read countless times. It was too expensive to keep buying new books and electronic games. Money would get tight every once in a while and we couldnt afford to keep going out and buying a new game or a new book every single time she ran out of things to read. We, as her parents, had to come with something that wouldnt cost money, but would keep challenging her, (L. Days). My parents came up with a word game that was inexpensive, but very beneficial to my learning.

COMPARISON TO DORA LOPEZ

Dora Lopez had a similar issue that I had.
Her parents didnt always have enough money to get her new things.

I began to write letters as a young child to a few of my relatives.

HOW LITERACY HAS CHANGED

The way people speak in this society has changed a lot since I was a young child. There are many new electronic devices available that have changed the way that many people speak. Through text messaging came text- talking which is a shortened sentence, or sometimes even a phrase with condensed words. Ex: this is wht I want 2 tlk abt Ex: ur instead of you are Reading and writing has become a lot more difficult to learn today.

CONCLUSION
As I grew older, reading and writing wasnt as important to me as it once was. I took part in many extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, as I began middle and high school. Learning literacy so early in my life allowed me to learn other subjects at a quicker pace, such as math. Math came fairly easy to me and as I progressed, I realized how much I really loved numbers. That brings me to my major, Accounting. My love for numbers helped me find a major that I would enjoy.
