Tool 1: Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R) Resources: Rebus, Inc., 4111 Jackson Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103; 1-800-435-3085 or (734) 668-4870. Ages: This tool is meant to be used with children from 3-6 years old. Administration of the Tool: This tool takes 15-20 minutes to be administered. An individual that has some background in the early childhood field should administer it. This is considered a disadvantage because this means most parents are not able to administer it, but it means that the results are unbiased and because of specific training and education, more accurate. It costs about $100. Content Areas: This test is partly given at a table and partly with the child standing up. This tool tests the childs skill level in the visual/motor, language and cognitive development areas. The test is culturally diverse and can be given in Spanish. It also has two versions, one for ages 34 ! and one for ages 4 ! -6. The childs parents are asked to accompany them and they take a test that will supplement the final results. This is a fast test that is given in a way that does not discourage the child or make them feel like they will pass or fail. Description of Purpose: The purpose of this assessment tool is to identify children who are at risk of having school problems or who may need special education services. This test ensures early intervention for learning delays, which has proven to be the best way to help children in these situations. This specific tool has proven to give very reliable results and in a group of 6000 students, 9 out of every 10 who were at risk were correctly identified using this test. This test also tested most students who were not at risk correctly. The main benefit to this test is that it is fast and non-threatening to the child.
