Biotechnology Presentation

Overview As the culminating project within a genetics unit, students will create a poster presentation centered around the role of genetics in emerging biotechnology. The context of the presentation will be a schoolwide technology symposium displaying various forms of technology. The poster will have four key pieces of information: the biological underpinnings of the biotechnology (put in layman's terms), what process the scientists went through to create the biotechnology, what effects the technology could have on individuals/society/environment/medicine, and what ethical considerations are relevant to the technology. The posters will be displayed and students will stand near their poster to give explanations and answer questions to those that are passing by. Standards This poster presentation is geared to reinforce two Florida science standards.

SC.912.L.16.10 - Evaluate the impact of biotechnology on the individual, society and the environment, including medical and ethical issues. SC.912.L.16.12 - Describe how basic DNA technology (restriction digestion by endonucleases, gel electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction, ligation, and transformation) is used to construct recombinant DNA molecules (DNA cloning). Handout Genetics Biotechnology Poster Presentation The future you will live in will be very different from today. One reason this will be the case: biotechnology. Over the next several weeks you will construct a poster presentation utilizing the genetics knowledge you have acquired this semester to be delivered to the entire school during the technology symposium via a poster. The topic is entirely up to you, but it has to be approved by Mr. Walton and must meet the following criteria: Be a technology related to genetics Must have come out in the last 10 years or is currently being researched The presentation must explain the mechanism behind how the biotechnology works accurately but also using layman terms or analogies Describe the process that the researchers used to create the technology, including obstacles that the researchers had to overcome or will need to overcome in the future Must explain how the biotechnology solves a problem or helps improve the world Describe the ethical considerations that are relevant to the biotechnology Rubric for the presentation 0 Students explanation of the technology is absent or severely deficient. Students description of the researchers methodology 1 Students explanation of the technology is below average and lacks clarity or accuracy. Students description of the researchers methodology 2 Students explanation of the technology is average and lacks some clarity or accuracy. Students description of the researchers methodology 3 Students explanation of the technology is adequate but lacks some clarity or accuracy. Style and Organization

Students description of the technologys importance to society is not clear and compelling or is missing. Poster is not logically organized, dynamic and engaging. Poster has pictures that do not appropriately illustrate the biotechnology. Student correctly cites the source of photos and academic information using APA style in none of the appropriate locations.

for discovering or improving the technology is below average and lacks some clarity and accuracy. Students description of the technologys importance to society is slightly clear and compelling. Poster is not very logically organized, dynamic, and engaging. Poster has pictures that barely appropriately illustrate the biotechnology. Student correctly cites the source of photos and academic information using APA style in less than half of the appropriate locations.
