This Months Q&A of Technology in the Classroom

Mrs. Tiffany Smith, a second grade teacher at Hyde Park Elementary, was recently interviewed regarding her use of technology to teach writing in the classroom. This is what she had to say Q: Have you ever had experience with teaching writing using technology? If so, what are some things you do in your classroom? A: Yes, I use technology across the curriculum in my classroom, but I would say that I probably use it during writing more so than any other subject. I actually did a lesson with technology this past week. To introduce the lesson, we watched a recorded reading of Giraffes Cant Dance on YouTube. Throughout the reading, I would pause and have the students tell me the settings in the story, who the main characters were, any dialogue being used, and any other details we might have been leaving out, as I would write everything down on chart paper. At the end of the reading, we had a compiled list of details from the story. Using the information we had, we made our own short story and added descriptive details as we went along. I did this so the students could learn how to add detail to their own stories to make them more interesting for other readers. (Smith, 2014) Q: Does using technology for instructional purposes engage the students more? A: Yes, I definitely think technology engages the students more. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background, so a lot of them dont have the privilege of interacting with different technologies in their home. When I use technology, the students are more focused on what Im doing and what theyre supposed to be learning. (Smith, 2014) Q: Is using technology in your lessons conducive to learning? A: I think it is. As I mentioned before, the students are more engaged in the lesson when I use technology. Therefore, they are able to learn more because theyre focusing better. (Smith, 2014)
