In the fifty years since antibiotics have come into widespread use, we have bred varying levels of drug resistance into every known kind of disease-causing bacterium. Weve done this, in part, by carpet-bombing the bodys normal resident microbes whenever we treat infections caused by the occasional invader. Weve also been dousing our livestock with antibiotics, not only to cure their infections but also to spur their growth so they can be brought to market more quickly and cheaply. Some of their highly drug-resistant bacteria have likewise ended up in our bodies via the dinner plate. Jessica Snyder Sachs, Good Germs, Bad Germs, p. 9-10
