I. Objectives: The children will gain a storytelling experience and learn about different animals in the sea. Skill: Language & Literacy Domain: Literacy Knowledge & Skills Element: Book Appreciation The children will be able to use their past knowledge about animals and build new knowledge about what the animals are like. Skill: Cognitive & General Knowledge Domain: Logic & Reasoning Element: Reasoning & Problem Solving The children will be able to understand the concepts to the natural and physical world. Skill: Cognitive & General Knowledge Domain: Science Knowledge & Skills Element: Conceptual Knowledge of the Natural & Physical World The children will use their expressive language to tell me what animals they saw on their adventure hunt. Skill: Language & Literacy Element: Language Development Domain: Expressive Language The children will use their creativity and imagination with material and assume roles in dramatic play situations. Skill: Creative Art Expression Domain: Creative Art Expression Element: Drama

II. Materials: Commotion in the Ocean by: Giles Andreae Animal checklist sheet 15 binoculars 17 zoo/aquarium animals Hint cards Paper towel rolls Duct tape Exacta knife Index cards III. Procedure:

A. Motivation First I will read the book Commotion in the Ocean by: Giles Andreae. Then I will ask the children if they would like to go on a make believe adventure hunt to find animals in the zoo and ocean. I will then hand each of them their own pair of binoculars and a checklist sheet. B. Steps 1. I will read Commotion in the Ocean by: Giles Andreae 2. I will ask the children if they would like to go on a make believe adventure hunt to find animals in the zoo and ocean. 3. I will hand each child a pair of binoculars with their names on them and give them each a checklist. 4. I will explain to them that they must find all of the animals on their paper and then check them off when they see the animals. 5. I will have myself, Melissa and Joan go around the classroom and read some of the clues to the children and have them figure out what animal they see. 6. I will explain to the children that once they see all of their animals to show me their checklist, put their binoculars in the bin and to have a seat quietly on the blue carpet. 7. When they are all done I will go over some of the animals they saw and have them wash their hands for breakfast.

IV. Conclusion: I will go over some of the animals that the children saw and asked them if they learned about new animals they have never heard of before. V. Transition: I will call one child at a time to come get their binoculars and start their adventure hunt. I will ask each child one animal they saw and to wash their hands for breakfast. VI. Follow-Up: 1. Place the binoculars in the dramatic play area for them to use whenever. 2. Read the class book to the children. 3. Place the clues in a class book for the children to learn throughout the rest of the year. 4. Continue learning about more zoo/aquarium animals for the following week VII. Evaluation/Assessment: 1. Were the children engaged in the storytelling activity? 2. Did the children successfully identify the objects in the book illustrations? 3. Were the children able to follow my verbal directions throughout the project? 4. Did the children understand the directions? 5. Did the children respond to and verbally share ideas with their peers? 6. Did the children understand the clues and what the animals were?
