Robert Gilchrist TWS 1: Contextual Factors- Mrs.

Jenkins 2nd Grade Classroom Physical Features The classroom is average size compared to the other classrooms in the building with basic toned colored walls and flooring. The teachers desk is located near the wall with the classroom door. The desks are put into three groups. There are also shelves of books, school materials, and pictures collected over the years at the school. Availability of Technology The classroom is well-equipped with current school technology materials. There is a Promethean Smartboard on the wall that the teacher uses for many of her lessons throughout the school day and she writes out their agenda homework at the end of the day on the Smartboard. Equipment The classroom has all the necessary equipment needed to accommodate both the teacher and the students. There are desks, tables, writing utensils, papers, books, Smartboard, etc. Learning environment The teacher has created a great learning environment for her class by giving them a simple yet educational experience in the classroom with all the materials they could need for assignments, lessons, drawing/coloring, and reading. Resources The resources in the classroom are easily accessible for the teacher and the students throughout the school year. Parent Involvement The teacher does her best to make sure the parents are involved by sending newsletters with her students to take home. These newsletters inform the parents about what the class/school is doing for that particular week/month (Meetings, Assignments, Special Occasions, etc.) She also posts information on her page on the schools website for the students parents/guardians. (http://www.greenwood52.org//Domain/69). Classroom rules and routines The teacher makes sure that the class follows the school/classroom rules and understands their routine/schedule. She has a color coordinated chart on the wall by the Smartboard that keeps track of the students behavior during the day. She moves their number clip up the chart if the student is behaving well and moves their clip down if they are behaving poorly. She moves them all to the

main color block at the end of each day, not trying to imply a carry over method with the chart. Grouping patterns The teacher placed the students desks into three groups with an even number of desks in each group (3-4 desks facing each other with another one at the head of the group). Scheduling The teacher has the schedule on the wall behind her desk so that all students can see what time a subject/activity is at during the school day. The class goes by the schedule time, though there is a flexibility to have a subject/activity go past its time frame and the teacher adjusts the schedule so they get to as many as they can before the end of the day. Classroom Arrangement The classroom is arranged so everyone can move around the room without any issue of desks/tables/chairs being in the way. This way, the students can get to the part of the classroom they need to go for any reason necessary during the day.
