Lesson Plan Using Popplet

Endorsement Subject Class Unit Lesson Resources Standard Elementary School Speech-Language Pathology Elementary Oral Articulation Articulation Evaluation Correct Articulation of /r/ Sounds in Words Print: Popplet, Evaluation Form, Google Images ASHA Standards Scope of Practice Using the ASHA Standards Scope of Practice this lesson plan will be used to serve elementary students in order to address typical communication skills. The lesson plan will focus on speech sound production skills such as articulation, voice, fluency, and language comprehension/expression. Clinical services will include evaluation, assessment, and documentation. This therapy lesson will focus on oral articulation skills of letters within words. The primary focus of the lesson is the production of the /r/ sound. For our lesson plan we created a Popplet in the shape of the letter R. In each Popplet weve included words with /r/ sounds that the student struggles to pronounce. We also included pictures as visual representation of the words. The student will be able to use the presentation mode of Popplet to zoom in on the pictures using an iPad. They will then say the name of the picture, which will contain an /r/ sound. Then they will move on to the next picture. The student will be able to use this visual to practice the /r/ sound both at school and at home. We will evaluate the students progress based on the speech pathologists articulation evaluation form. The speech pathologist should have the child use an iPad to view the Popplet visual during the session. There will also be a printed out sheet of the Popplet visual for the student to use after the therapy lesson. Objective 1: Practice producing the /r/ sound within words. Objective 2: Language skills such as saying the name of the picture that they see. Objective 3: Reading comprehension: reading the word while trying to articulate the sound correctly.

Objective 4: Giving the client a fun visual tool to look at that they can work on at therapy and at home. Preparing the Student Assessment of Student Learning To prepare for the lesson the student, with the help of the speech pathologist, will need to compile a list of /r/ words they struggle with. Students will be learning through a few of the stages of Blooms Taxonomy: Create: Using words with /r/, the student will need to create a list of words that they have trouble pronouncing. Evaluate: Students will need to evaluate the list of words as the speech pathologist pronounces each word in two different ways. The student will need to tell them which is the correct pronunciation. Analyze: Students will analyze and understand how they need to articulate in order to make the correct /r/ sound for each word. Apply: Students will need to apply the information by trying to verbally pronounce each word on their list. Understand: Students will need to be able to discuss with the speech pathologist why their articulators need to be in a certain position to pronounce each word correctly. Remember: Students will need to recall what they know about how to use their articulators when trying to pronounce words. Especially for words that have the /r/ sound in them. Overall, using these steps are going to help the students succeed in perfecting the way they pronounce their /r/ sounds. They will be taking things they know and adding new information in order to figure out how to pronounce /r/. By using that and practicing students should be able to succeed. First, as a speech pathologist, compile a list of words with the /r/ sound that the child struggles with. The speech pathologist will have the child use an iPad to view the Popplets that include pictures and words with the /r/ sound during the session. The student will be able to use the presentation mode of Popplet to zoom in on the pictures using an iPad. They will then say the name of the picture, which will contain an /r/ sound. Then they will move on to the next picture. The student will be able to use this visual to practice the /r/ sound in a fun and technological way. The speech pathologist will record the progress of the /r/ sound using and oral articulation evaluation form. There will also be a printed out sheet of the Popplet visual for the student to use after the therapy lesson to

take home and work on. Measurement of Success If the child uses this Popplet sheet to continue to practice the words that he or she has been struggling with, the success will be measured by how clearly the student can pronounce the word after the lesson, and after practice. The speech pathologist will be using an articulation evaluation form to track the students progress.
