Lesson Title: Integrating Technology into Music and Art Grade Level: 4th grade Date: 4/28/14

Lesson Objectives: Through this lesson in music and art, we hope to educate students about these art forms through the use of technology. We also aim to display to students that music and art can be transformed through the use of technology. By the end of this lesson, students should be capable of defining different forms of music and art integrated into technology, along with an understanding that he or she makes the difference in music and art. It is through the person that art and music are created; technology is a mere tool in which the art forms are enhanced. Students should also gain an understanding of strategies and improvements made in the technology age. Procedures: 1) A short art activity will be presented. The students will have a few minutes to complete this activity while sitting in their seats. 2) A Prezi will be presented that covers information from the Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching text. 3) Each student involved in the presentation will give a summary of the sections in chapter 13, Teaching and Learning with Technology in Music and Art Instruction. 4) After the summaries are given and any questions are answered, a music activity will be presented. The students, along with the instructors, will all participate in this music activity. Maracas will be used by the students to acquire a beat. A song will either be played or sung to move along with the beat. Instruction of notes in music will take place through this activity. Materials: Art activity sheets Prezi on Chapter 13 containing summaries of each section Maracas made using plastic egg shells and rice Music previously recorded or sung live by class

Rachel Clark Chapter 13.1 Summary: The Arts in the Information Age 1. Fact: Educators in this age are resisting computers and technology. They view the fight of technology and tradition as impersonal machines vs. traditionally humanistic endeavors. 2. Advancement through technology: Technology is not just limited to impersonal machines, as many educators believe. Through the use of technology, art and music have evolved in a major way! -phonograph used in music -camera used in visual arts/photography 3. Fact: The integration of computers and other forms of electronic technology represents the next logical step in the evolution of the arts. (page 354 text) 4. What it takes to make art: When discussing the role of arts education in the digital age, there are three broad concepts that are important to the creation of media art. These concepts include active engagement, a personal connection to the task to inspire learning, and the development of art that brings value to a community. (Peppler 2010) 5. Changes in definition: As educators are struggling to keep up with changing demands of this new digital era, new literary theorists argue that our very definition of literacy is expanding to include any type of communication interaction involving speaking, reading, listening, drawing and writing with text in print and with non-print forms. Aka, texting is now defined as literary communication 6. Cool website to check out: The National Association for Music Education (http://www.menc.org) Works on transforming scientific discovery into technology through music

7. YOU make the difference in music and art, NOT technology! In the end, its you who wields the paintbrush and the microphone. That being said, YOU also create music through audio tracks and art through Photoshop! Make it happen. Its not going to create itself!
