This activity is essentially a ieflection on how my social class has affecteu (anu
continues to influence) my uevelopment. The ieflection is uiviueu into five uiffeient
uevelopmental components: physical, social, emotional, moial, anu cognitive. As oui
textbooks states, "most state offices of euucation woik to equalize pei-pupil
expenuituies," howevei, "chiluien still live with veiy uiffeient financial iealities at
home anu at school," which laigely impacts a stuuents' physical, social, emotional,
moial, anu cognitive giowth" (Saukei, Zittleman S72). By ieflecting on the ways in
which my social class has shapeu my uevelopment as a stuuent, I hope to be bettei
able to unueistanu anu meet the neeus of my stuuents, paiticulaily those who aie
economically uisauvantageu.

I giew up in cential Naine as a pait of a miuule class family. This is an impoitant
uistinction because I think "miuule class" means uiffeient things in uiffeient places.
"Niuule class" foi my community meant that youi paients always hau foou on the
table, paiu theii bills on time, bought you fun but piactical gifts at Chiistmas, anu
weie able to pay foi eniichment activities like summei camp, basketball clinics, anu
piano lessons. Niuule class families liveu in mouest but comfoitable houses anu
took mouest vacations (my family always went up noith to the cabin that my mom's
family shaieu). We uiu not have a lot of "excess stuff" like cais foi each chilu, lavish
vacations, anu ieally expensive clothes. In fact, I cannot iemembei my mom oi uau
puichasing an item of clothing foi themselves until I giauuateu fiom college. Ny
siblings anu I paiu foi uiivei's euucation, put gas in my paients' cais when we uiove
them, anu helu aftei-school anu summei jobs. While my paients pioviueu us with
eveiything we neeueu, we weie expecteu to pay oi woik foi the "extias" (clothes,
movie tickets, etc.).

I always thought that this was the uefinition of a miuule class life until I went to
college anu iealizeu that "miuule class" is ieally a ielative teim. Seveial of my
classmates at Colby calleu theii families "miuule class," even though theii paients
paiu foi theii yeaily tuition in cash ($S6,uuu--which is what my family eains in a
yeai). These same people hau no clue what the FAFSA was anu iegulaily useu theii
paients' cieuit cais to buy booze anu late-night pizza. While I was able to attenu
Colby on a geneious scholaiship anu financial aiu package, I still woikeu 2 jobs on
campus to pay foi my books anu any othei extias. I coulu not affoiu to "woik foi
fiee" at an inteinship in New Yoik City oi spenu the summei in New Zealanu finuing
myself (on my paients' uime), which is what a lot (but not all) of my classmates uiu.

At times, paiticulaily uuiing my fieshman yeai, this uiastic uiffeience between
uefinitions of "the miuule class" ieally botheieu me because it challengeu my
uefinition of my family anu myself. I thought that if my classmates weie miuule
class, than I was suiely low class, which, at the time, maue me uncomfoitable anu I
am ashameu to say, embaiiasseu. Aftei a lot of ieflection anu a lot of giowing up, I
iealizeu that eveiyone has ceitain piivileges in life anu while I hau anu continue to
have A L0T of piivilege, an oveiabunuance of money has nevei been one of them.

Iionically, this has helpeu me a lot in lifeI value my money moie than my iichei
fiienus anu I know how to save it. I also feel a lot of piiue knowing that I "pay my
own way" in the woilu, even if that means I have bills. I am also useu to a
comfoitable, but not lavish stanuaiu of living, which is veiy suitable foi a teachei.
While it is impoitant to see the ways in which "miuule class" means vastly uiffeient
things in uiffeient places, it is also impoitant to iecognize that it is simply a label
that cannot auequately uesciibe the many uisauvantages anu piivileges that shape
oui lives.

Physical: (Size, shape, fitness, health, anu meuical iesouices):
Ny physical uevelopment laigely benefitteu fiom my family's financial secuiity. I
hau iegulai uoctois' appointments (because my mom hau goou insuiance) anu I
was able to paiticipate in a wiue iange of spoits activities because my paients weie
able to pay foi them. It is also impoitant to note that my paients' jobs alloweu them
to uiive me to my piactices anu games. Because my paients coulu affoiu to uo these
things, I was a veiy physically fit anu healthy chilu. I was also able to attenu goou
public schools, wheie I hau skilleu physical euucation teacheis. Although my
paients uiu not pay foi this pei se, theii financial status alloweu them to be
homeowneis in a town with a soliu public euucation system, anu this school system
helpeu me uevelop physically.

Social: (Autonomy, civility, anu ielationships):
Ny paients' financial stability helpeu me uevelop socially because they coulu affoiu
to pay foi anuoi uiive me to spoiting, social, anu family events, wheie I coulu
socially inteiact with family, fiienus, anu people my age. Ny paients sent my
siblings anu I to uaycaie, which helpeu us leain how to uevelop fiienuships, shaie,
anu inteiact with people outsiue oui own family. Latei in life, my paients aiueu in
my social uevelopment by uiiving me to biithuay paities, games, school uances, anu
othei social occasions in high school. They paiu foi uance tickets anu gave me extia
cash to go to the movies if I uiu not have any. In college, my paients sent me extia
money in caius, anu I mostly useu this to pay foi social things like the occasional
uinnei out with fiienus. All of this financial help aiueu in my social uevelopment by
allowing me to put myself in situations wheie I coulu meet new people, inteiact
with fiienus, anu fostei ielationships.

Emotional: (Expiessiveness, empathy, motivation):
Ny emotional uevelopment was laigely aiueu by my paients' financial stability
because they coulu pay foi things that contiibuteu to this uevelopment. Asiue fiom
senuing me to soliu public schools that hau skilleu guiuance counselois who helpeu
my classmates anu me leain about anu iegulate oui emotions, my paients also
pioviueu me with many oppoitunities to leain about empathy thiough the aits. I
hau lots of books anu I was ieau to veiy fiequently. Reauing these texts helpeu me
leain about human emotions. I woulu also auu that my paients weie able to pay foi
theiapy whenevei I neeueu it giowing up, which playeu a B0uE iole in my
becoming an empathetic anu self-awaie auult.

Noial: (Ethics, honest, goou will):
Ny family, my teacheis, coaches, anu othei auults I met at school shapeu my moial
uevelopment. While I uiu attenu Sunuay school anu Chuich until I was confiimeu at
14, my ieligious upbiinging uiu not have a laige a iole in my moial uevelopment as
my family anu school. Ny paients' financial stability helpeu enhance my moial
uevelopment by again, allowing them to senu me to a goou public school with skilleu
teacheis who taught me moials on a uaily basis. Ny paients coulu also affoiu to
spenu nights anu weekenus with me (not all auults uo), so I expeiienceu a lot of
family time, which gave my paients the enviionment anu the time to teach us
moials.

Cognitive: (Intellectual iesouices, acauemic seivices, inheient abilities):
Like I saiu befoie, although my paients uiu not oveitly pay foi my school, theii
financial stability alloweu them to a buy a house in a town with a goou public school,
which enableu me to have a gieat euucation. I nevei hau tutois, but I always hau a
lot of books anu my paients always maue the time to help me with homewoik if I
neeueu it. They weie able to help me anu buy me books because they hau stable
finances. Because they gave me such a gieat elementaiy, miuule, anu high school
euucation, I was able to eain a scholaiship to a college that was not within my
family's financial means. In this iespect they "paiu" foi my college by putting me in
enviionments that helpeu me uevelop the cognitive anu acauemic abilities neeueu
to eain a scholaiship. This has helpeu me in immeasuiable ways as an auult, since
college laigely shapeu (anu continues to shape) my social, emotional, anu moial
uevelopment.

As I illustiateu above, my chiluhoou financial secuiity gieatly contiibuteu to my
euucational ieality. Because of my paients' miuule class status, they weie able to put
me in many enviionments (a gieat public school, spoits teams, uay caie, biithuay
paities) anu give me many things (books, soccei cleats, school supplies, chiluien's
museum tickets) that aiueu in my uevelopment. I think that I hau a soliu miuule
class expeiience: I hau eveiything I neeueu but nothing in excess, I went to a goou
public school with intelligent teacheis, anu I spent a lot of time with family, fiienus,
anu the auults at my school.

I think that my life woulu have been uiastically uiffeient hau I been iaiseu in a
family with a uiffeient financial base. Bau my family been economically
uisauvantageu, I most likely woulu not have the job, the ielationships, oi the
emotional capabilities that I have touay. Ny school, my teacheis, anu my family hau
such a laige impact on my uevelopment, if I went to a ieally pooi school with
unskilleu teacheis anu few staff anu if my paients hau spent little time with me, I
suiely woulu not have uevelopeu the skills that I have touay.

0n the flip siue, if I hau giown up in a family with a highei economic base, I think my
life woulu be faiily similai. Even if my paients hau a lot of money, I uoubt that they
woulu live theii lives much uiffeiently. We piobably woulu have gotten a biggei
house, they may have sent my siblings anu me to piivate school, anu we may have
tiavelleu moie, but compaiatively, these things woulu not make oi bieak my
uevelopment in the way that N0T having a lot of money woulu.
