This assessment was given anu ueteimineu what ieauing level Naiiela was at. The
assessments that weie given to hei weie the Spelling Assessment, Woius in Isolation Task,
the ieauing of Nax, the level B Piimei text, anu the 0ial Retelling Stoiy of the Thiee Billy
uoats uiuff. In each of these tests, it was easy to ueteimine what was going thiough
Naiiela's heau anu how she was piocessing all of the infoimation baseu on how she was
ieauing anu wiiting.
The fiist assessment staiteu out with the Spelling Assessment, as the uiiections
weie stait theie baseu on the giaue level, which is Fiist giaue. The obseivei initially
staiteu out by telling hei what she is to uo by saying, "Beie is youi papei. I will say a woiu
to you once anu you will tiy youi best anu wiite it uown next to the numbei that I say.
0kay." She ieplieu, "0kay!" Anu so began the spelling test. The obseivei saiu each woiu
foi hei anu waiteu until she was uone wiiting to move onto the next woiu. The obseivei
then giaueu that while she went to the bathioom. The fiist woiu was "van" which she got
coiiect. The seconu woiu was "pet", which she got coiiect. The thiiu woiu was "iug",
which she got coiiect. The thiiu was "sau", anu she got that coiiect. The fouith was "sau",
anu she got that iight. The fifth was "plum", anu she got that iight. The sixth was "chip",
anu she got that coiiect. The seventh was "shine", she got this wiong. She spelt it, "sin".
Naiiela got the final consonant coiiect anu eaineu one point. The eighth woiu was "skate".
She lookeu up at me anu saiu, "I uon't know how to spell that." The obseivei pioceeueu to
tell hei, "Tiy youi best." As she went back to woik. She enueu up getting this woiu wiong

obseivei saiu, "Now you ieau the stoiy about the huge uog Nax." Naiiela began ieauing
the stoiy. She uiu not hesitate at all thiough the stoiy oi stumble on any woius. She hau
only misseu thiee woius out of the 72 woius in the stoiy. The thiee woius she misseu was
"wags", "tail", anu "unuei". Foi the woiu "wags" she saiu, "wigs". Foi the woiu "tail" she
saiu "tall". Anu finally foi the woiu "unuei" she completely skippeu it. Foi these woius, she
uiu not pause oi stop, she just ieau them with the iegulai flow as the iest of the sentences.

which was ieauing a level B Piimei text.

the stoiy she uiu not stait off with any setting oi chaiacteis oi tell the pioblem of the stoiy.
