Lesson Objective
The objective of the lesson is what students will be able to do as they leave your class. For this objective, use the Standards of Learning (SOL) to say what you want to focus on. You can find the SOLs at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/ look on the right of the screen for the subjects and go from there.
1. Students will write a paragraph on the same topic. SOL 3.9d 2. Students will include details that elaborate the main idea. SOL 3.9e 3. Students will ask and answer questions about what is read. SOL 3.6d 4. The student will use available technology for reading and writing. SOL 3.12
The purpose of the lesson is to have small groups of students collaborate together to write a story. In a previous lesson the groups of students have created story map that identified characters, conflicts, resolutions and settings for their story. During this lesson the students will collaborate to write a paragraph about the main character from their previous story map. The focus of writing about the main character will help students to practice their writing skills as well as using supporting details to enhance their writing. The teacher will begin the lesson by explaining the importance of describing the setting of the story and detailing the characters to make them seem real. The teacher will read single paragraphs from three different books (Charlottes Web by E.B. White, Ramona The Pest by Beverly Cleary and Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone by J.K Rowling) that describe the main character. Students will listen and the teacher will ask questions to the class as a whole about the details they obtained from listening to the paragraphs about these memorable characters.
The teacher will give the students instructions on how to collaborate as a group for the writing task. Students will go to their own computers for this activity. They will load the class wiki page with the assignment labeled Writing about Characters and Settings. The teacher will instruct the students to write a complete paragraph about the character to include using a topic sentence and using supporting ideas. The students will have 15 minutes to write. The teacher will gain the attention of the class and describe the next step of the activity. After writing, each student will visit the wiki page of another student to read their character paragraph. The student reading will ask one question to the writer and provide one sentence that could fit into the paragraph of the writer (minimum requirement). After 5 minutes the students will visit another students wiki page and read their character paragraph. Again the student reading will ask one question to the writer and provide one sentence that could fit into the writers paragraph. Lastly, the student will return to his own wiki page to read the questions and sentences and make any changes or revisions to his or her own paragraph. The teacher will conclude the class by having the students come to the front of the classroom on the class rug. The teacher will ask questions about the writing process and reviewing process of other students work. I can assess student learning of the objectives by teacher observation and notes based on class discussion of the character paragraph writing activity. I can use the wiki space to assess and comment on the students writing to include the use of a main topic and supporting details in the paragraph as well as the ability to ask questions about what is read.
