DErricka McGill Professor Camargo ENG 1102-033 February 12, 2014 Proposal: Role of a Professional Nurse 1.

What is your Inquiry Question? a. What is a nurse and who are they focused on? Are they just focused on children and adults or is it more than that? 2. What is your primary purpose? To explore the role of a professional nurse and find out more about the profession I would like to go in which is my major as well. o What does the nurse have to be capable of, going into the nursing field in order to make their job successful? o Where can a nurse practice? Is it just in the hospitals or healthcare facilities? o Why do nurses have to use clinical judgment and why are they responsible for dead and disabled patients? 3. What, if any, prior beliefs, assumptions, preconceptions, ideas, or prejudices do you bring to this project? What personal experiences may have shaped the way you feel about it? Before you began developing a working knowledge on the topic, what were you thinking about it? What are you thinking about it now? a. What is a nurse and who are they focused on? Are they just focused on children and adults or is it more than that? Why? Im interested in this question because Im going into the nursing field and I would like to have a better understanding of what a nurse do and whats their focus. The experience I have is actually having a one on one with nurses from Presbyterian and Carolinas medical. I also had a chance to serve the patients as well as talk with them in regards of their needs such as help getting the ice off the tray. b. What does the nurse have to be capable of, going into the nursing field in order to make their job successful? Why? This question interests me because in order to get into the nursing program, one has to have a little capability to start with. For example, taking classes and passing them so they can obtain the basics of the

body and communication skills whether its talking to a patient, patients family, or another professional. The experience I have is taking nursing classes which consisted of communication skills and classes teaching me about the body as a whole. c. Where can a nurse practice? Is it just in the hospitals or healthcare facilities? Why? As a nursing major, one needs to understand what he or she is getting themselves into. If one feels more comfortable working in a hospital or healthcare facility then that person need to do everything in their will to make that happen. If one gets stuck somewhere such as a private home nursing someone, that person may not do their job correctly because they dont feel comfortable in the position theyre in. d. Why do nurses have to use clinical judgment and why are they responsible for dead and disabled patients? Why? I would like to know more about clinical judgment and what it is. What if they dont know how to make clinical judgments? Therefore I would like to research and find out more, to get a better understanding and why nurses have to use and make clinical judgments. 4. Describe your working knowledge of your topic so far. This is what you have discovered so far in your preliminary research. Discuss what seem to be possibilities in your search. Did Googling turn up a lot of related information? Does information seem to be coming from reliable sources? Have you talked about your topic with your friends? Do people generally know about it or not know? Have you checked the electronic databases or the library catalogue to see if there are available sources? Include in this section the title, author, and source of one piece of research youve found in your preliminary research and how it relates to your question. a. One of the resources I am currently using is Google scholar. I am finding a lot of information about the role of a nurse and how they adapt in different situations. When I shared my information with my peers/group, they gave me a little insight on what I should look up such as death and patients which ties into my question about the responsibility of disabled and dead patients.

5. What do you plan to do for your primary research? Who do you hope to interview or survey? What do you plan on observing? What do you hope to learn? a. For a primary resource, I plan to interview my old manager from Carolinas Medical. I also plan to research different documents or blogs about different nurses and their roles as a nurse. With both of these I can compare and contrast the two in order to have accurate documentations as well as a variety.
